Cross-game party chat coming to PS3 (with strings attached)

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/cross-game-party-chat-coming-to-ps3-with-strings-attached/

Finally! Cross-game chat is coming to the PlayStation Network! After what seems like years of demand, Sony has announced cross-game chat, which allows PSN members to talk to each other, even while playing different games. However, the oft-demanded feature does come with one large caveat: chats can only be initiated by PlayStation Plus members.

PlayStation Plus members will be able to send invites to any member of the PlayStation Network, free or paid. Up to four PSN members can be in a party chat, however at least one participant must be a member of PSN+. The chat will discontinue if all paying members disconnect.

While some may be disappointed that such a hotly demanded feature is closed behind a pay wall, the service is still technically available to free members. Xbox Live, on the other hand, does not enable a similar feature for non-paying Xbox Live members. So long as you're popular and have friends that pay for PlayStation Plus, you should be able cross-game chat and keep your free ride, too.

^^ I used to play that game non stop on the original Playstation. Seeing the gameplay for the new one has me really excited that it's basically the same thing with better graphics and more innovation.

I actually like the Playstation Plus ideal. I may try it out.

Other things I'm looking forward to:

Gears of War 3 (this franchise is the only reason I still have a 360)

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

Marvel vs Capcom 3 (MVC2 is my all time favorite fighting game)

Portal 2

LA Noire (Rockstar games, epicness)

PS Move (will most likely trade or sell my Wii once this hits)

On the fence about:
Killzone 3

Twisted Metal (loved the original ones, but then they got a little stale.)

I enjoyed Spectre and Minion a lot. I am still too pumped for that game.

Also wish I had a Wii for the new Goldeneye and Donkey Kong games coming out.

I don't get why anyone would get Playstation Plus. Seems like a large fee for relatively little gain.

Twisted Metal is a sweet series.

Move looks like it could have some sweet games.

I'd say E3 has so far been Microsoft = Sony (depending on which platform you prefer the most you might have liked ones presentation better but I think both were good), poop, Nintendo

Yeah, I won't be getting Playstation Plus....sounds about as useful to me as that whole lobby sorta thing they had going.

lol @ you guys laughing at PSN +, you're probably the same dropping $50 for xbox Live...

At least Sony still gives you a choice though.

I am one of them.

If giving the choice to pay $50 for PSN+ or $40 for XBL (you can find game cards at this price EVERYWHERE), people are going to pick XBL.

I've never liked the PS3 interface or PSN's interface. Home was a TOTAL flop. People were claiming that to be the XBL killer. The free game choices are going to be shit games.

* Auto-patching feature, which will detect, download and install updates

SERIOUSLY? If the damn thing doesn't patch enough already. I can't turn it out with another patch (I don't play it often enough but they are long and horrible).

Yeah, the constant updates with PSN are my problem too. I gave up on playing the MLB game....it took too long to download the patches. I just don't see the appeal of the PLUS option, when there are offering a free version.

I popped in MLB the Show a couple of nights ago for the first time since May. It took me 3 minutes for an update to play the game.

I prefer the PSN interface over Xbox Live as well.. Much cleaner look imo..

Home is pointless (though a ton of people use it), but so is that Live game thing where you dress up your own "game room"...

Yeah but if Microsoft had a free version that offered pretty much everything we'd be using it too.

But no one claimed Game Room to be anything revolutionary. Sony was acting like Home was the second coming. And it got delayed like 354 times.

I could give a shit less about all these perks that xbox live and PSN are trying to offer. I want to just pop the game in and play(NES style). The only thing I use is friend invites.

I agree. I don't care about the extra frills, I just want to pop in a game and either play the campaign or hop online.

However, I don't care much for paying to play a game the way it was intended to be played out of the box. I don't mind patches as no game is shipped perfectly, but DLC is STUPID.

I agree....I don't mind patches, but some of these games update almost daily. I like the glitches in Red Dead....flying horses=GOAT
