M*A*S*H was probably the best of all time. Newhart was certainly the most creative and because of that I think that it's right up there with M*A*S*H. To not even have Newhart on the poll is a joke.
Geez, it was before my time, crucify me why don't you?? I have never even watched one whole episode of MASH, just included it cause I have heard about the finale breaking all kinds of ratings records. I have heard of Newhart, but couldn't tell you one thing about it ....
It was way before my time too (I'm only 24) but it's also probably the most well knows series finale of all time (that and maybe
M*A*S*H because it is was, and probably always will be, the most watched non-sporting event of all time). TV Guide also picked the
Newhart finale as the greatest of all time. I'm just saying that it would be like asking which college football program is the greatest ever, but leaving Notre Dame off the list simply because their greatness was before your time, even though they are one of the winningest programs of all time. All I'm saying is that sometimes a little research doesn't hurt.
haha, fair enough ... but being 100% honest here, I had NO clue that the Newhart finale was that big until I watched the Jimmy Kimmel LOST special and they spoofed it. I admit, it was completely over my head, never watched the show or even heard about the ending. However, I am quick to admit that it must have been big, as many have talked about it. I must have lived in a cave or something! haha
Yeah, well the show itself wasn't huge, and it's not one of those shows like the
Brady Bunch or
M*A*S*H that has been running continuously in syndication since it went off the air, so it's not as memorable or well known to later generations. what made the finale of
Newhart great was that they played it as if the entire series was simply a dream he had during his first series,
The Bob Newhart Show. I don't think that was ever the idea or intention behind the second series, but it was a hilarious and unexpected way to finish that show.
