If this were any other young adult speaking on the problems of teenage pregnancy and promoting abstinence based on her own struggles/problems, you would cheer for her strong character at overcoming the odds and helping other young girls avoid the same mistakes.

You know it, I know it.
If this were any other young adult speaking of the problems of teenage pregnancy they wouldn't be milking it for 30K either.

You know it, and I know it.

She should if she can milk it for what its worth if an idiot is going to pay it. I could sit here and make those demands as well, they are the idiots if they are going to pay it!

I agree that she should milk this for all it's worth, but you could grab someone off the street and have her speak, you wouldn't have to pay that kind of lettuce, it's all about her name :(

I think she will have a pretty hard time getting that much, but you never know. There is definitely something to be said for hearing from both those who have suffered the consequences of their actions and those who made the decision not to take the actions. Some will be influenced by the former, some the latter, some both and some neither. As others have said, ultimately the market will determine if Bristol Palin's perspective on abstinance is relevant and valuable. I wish her well.

I can't wait for the day her son asks mommy what she does for a living.

"Well, Trippity-doo-da, I do what your grandma taught me: I got a gimmick."

"A gimmick? What does that mean?"

"It means that I get people to pay me obscene amounts of money to talk about things I know nothing about, desperately ignoring the cognitive dissonance of saying that I love my son but that I really shouldn't have had him."

"...what?"

"AND I keep my clothes on while doing it, unlike a certain mulleted sperm donor I know."

"Well, Mommy, in keeping with the family business of famewhoring, I can't wait to grow up and write a book about you and Grandma."

"That's my boy."

$15,000 for a public figure(a celebrity if you will) to give speeches is not a lot of money. In fact, I would bet it is on the low end of the norm. I recall seeing where Lou Holtz used to command high six figures for his public speaking engagements.

Just to show I am not talking out of my arse, I did a very cursory google search. I found several articles that confirmed by suspicions. Here is an example of one. Note, this article states a typical range for a celebrity is anywhere from $15,000-115,000 a gig.

As someone else noted, the biggest beef people have with this figure is the name of the person giving the speeches.

Lou Holtz is alot more accomplished than Bristol Palin. Both are ridiculous amounts of money for a speaking gig. Some ppl think it's ridiculous for a MLB pitcher to make 5k/pitch. That's somewhat true but that's a very specific skill set that tnot many ppl can do. On the other hand I could grab Marla off the corner after school lets out and she could share her experiences w/ teen pregnancy.

Again, its not Bristols fault for trying to milk this. She learned from her mama.

However, to act like some rich girl with a famous mother is exhibiting some extraordinary amnt of character that should be applauded is a stretch.

I agree Lou and Britol are different animals, but the fact remains $15K is a drop in a bucket for a celebrity figure for a speaking gig. Hell, Paris Hilton is a nobody and she gets paid even bigger bucks just show up at night clubs and the like. The fact is people are going to pay more for a celebrity than they will "Marla off the street" because nobody gives a rats ass about "Marla off the street. They would have interest in watching a celebrity. I don't care if a liberal, a conservative, a black guy, a white guy, an latino or a hermaphrodite. It is the way it is. There's really no need to bitch and whine about it just because you have some intense hatred for the Palin family

Haha.

She knew she was going to be in good shape financially when her mother quit on the people of Alaska. She'll be just fine as far as money is concerned because of her mother.

if she's a good enough speaker and delivers a strong enough message(which I think, to the right audience, she may do), then hell give her the money

There is no doubt some of you are just plain and simple Palin haters. This could be anyone of your daughters! Any of you calling her trash, etc....have daughters? Guess what they could get pregnant too incase you weren't aware. Is your daughter with you 24/7? If not then its more than probably it could happen. I could care less that she is a Palin. Anyone could make this type of demand for whatever service they want to offer. Its up to those that choose the service to pay it or not!

Lou Holtz is alot more accomplished than Bristol Palin.
Not when it comes to being a single mother.

I'm in no ways trying to say Bristol Palin has it easy being a teenage mother, but I'd imagine she sure has it better than just about every other teenage mom in this country.

I don't know how hard or difficult Bristol Palin's life as a single is and I don't care.

I am not a Sarah Palin fan, but I find it laughable that she is painted by some to be a total idiot, yet she is marketing herself like someone who knows exactly what they are doing. She is selling books, giving speeches, and making serious bank.

She ain't no dummy.

Like it or not, her name is the draw. She was on the public stage for her pregnancy and is well known. People want to hear what she's doing now and how she's making it. Of course the speaking fees help her to make it by comfortably, but I applaud her for taking the initiative to do this. Many wouldn't do it out of fear of speaking and fear of ridicule. You think it's that easy to get on stage and know that there are people there to see you fail - not as many as the genuine people there to hear you speak, but they are there. I'm not a Palin fan or supporter one bit, but I don't knock this. She has a story to tell and it's one better told by someone who's family was in the highest of spotlights only to have it shine on the darkest of situations. Instead of despair and failure, she can speak of fortitude and perseverance.

ummmm, I could argue some young adults who have overcome the struggles of remaining abstinent despite the pressures from society and within their own bodies????
And I would counter argue facing the consequences is stronger evidence than a belief. You can have a parade of Bible thumpers on stage and kids will make fun of them, you put a single teen mother up there and they not only relate but they listen. Do you have a problem with the amount of money she is getting paid or her last name?
If anything she's a poster child for how teen abstinence isn't a great path...

She was obviously raised in an environment that exhorts those virtues... but she thought otherwise. Maybe if she was properly educated about practicing safe sex she wouldn't have a baby.

Snooki makes that just for going to some bar and getting drunk.

And a fun note, the girl that goes out and does cartwheels in a dress with no underwear is the one that DOESN'T have the illegitimate child.

The lesson: Snooki > Bristol

Consequences !!?? I know a few gals who could tell the same story. Only her LAST name made her the big bucks. She's just doubling her pleasure.

Well yeah, that's a no-brainer. Shit, giving speeches for cash is cool and all, but I'd rather get cash for getting idiot-plastered!

You are correct, but the last time I woke up I was in America. A country that thrives on celebrity and popularity. Bristol has the right last name so she will get the attention, the others won't. Same in every walk of like in this country pretty much. Oh same in Corp. America, it’s all about who you know. Who cares anyways. Like someone else pointed out people get paid shitloads of cash for speaking engagements all the time, most famous as well. If someone is dumb enough to pay it that is their freaking problem.

I agree that the problem here lies in the girl's last name and hatred for her mother. It's pretty simple.

I for one hope we hear more speeches by Palins in the future and less from our current president. Hopefully, once November of 2010 passes, he will be on the path to his way out.
