I honestly dont see why Spiller is as much in this discussion as he is.
Gerhart should be the leader right now.
CJ Spiller has TD's of 58 yards or longer in 8 of 10 games this season. He had 3 snaps in our game against FCS Coastal Carolina. He is one of two players to score a TD in every game this season. He has a TD in 5 different ways: rushing, receiving, punt return, kick return, and passing.
He joins Reggie Bush as only players in college football history with 3000 yards rushing, 1500 yards in kickoff returns, 1000 in receiving and 500 in punt returns.
He ranks 7th in the history of all-purpose yards stats.
He holds the NCAA record for most TD plays of over 50 yards with 20 (8 coming this season). He holds 26 Clemson records. He has had 10 TD plays of over 80 yards in his career.
He has amassed these stats as a #2 back before this season.
Spiller has been kicked off to only 16 times this season, with 3 coming back for TDs, and he has one punt return this season (he is tied for the career lead in kick returns for TD at six, and adds 2 punt returns). Teams have stopped kicking to spiller since the Miami game. In fact, NC state attempted an onside kick on every kickoff last week in an attempt to neutralize his return game.
All of these stats have been recorded this season by a hurt Spiller. He sustained serious turf toe in the first game, and has been limping all season. He walks around campus in a boot all week, every week, and only takes it off to practice and play.
The Heisman is supposed to go to the player most valuable to his team. CJ Spiller is the Clemson offense, and the team has a chance to play for its first ACC title in 19 years. He is also an academic all-american and one of the leading charity workers on the team.
Say what you will, but if you don't think Spiller's stats warrant a heisman, than you also subscribe to Reggie Bush not being in the discussion when he won. Spiller is putting up similar numbers to him, and is just as versatile as a player.
I don't expect him to win it, because it will go to an ESecPN player. But I think a trip to New York is deserved for the unbelievable season he has had this year.
