On CFB Live, it was reported that Missouri, Nebraska, Notre Dame, and Rutgers have been told they would be welcome to join the Big Ten.

Now that they have been told the would be welcome, I wouldn't be shocked at all if Notre Dame jumps at this chance. That's all they have been waiting for!!!

I was surprised that it was Rutgers out of the Big East and not Pitt.

Going to 15 seems like a strange move. It will create some strange schedules, especially in football if you have divisions of different sizes.

Maybe they forsee a problem with at least one of those teams, thus giving us 14. What I mean is, they invited those four schools, but they think Notre Dame (in my opinion) is the least likely to join. That, or maybe they know that this is going to create a ripple effect in college football, and the Big East - when all is said and done - could come after Northwestern, or one of the lower tier schools in our conference. It's all speculation, and it wasn't a formal invite - I don't think.

I can't see Notre Dame accepting even tho I think they should. Count me in as being shocked Rutgers was offered over Pitt.

^^^SI said it had something to do with an educational accredidation that Rutgers had that made them more attractive than other Big East teams

It just ran accross the bottom of ESPN that the Big Ten has offered the four schools mentioned. If all four accept, then they'll look to add a fifth, making the Big "10" a 16 team league. Not 100%, but I'm pretty sure that it said the statement was strait from the commish as he refused to further comment on the matter.

Rutgers brings nothing in the major sports. It is located in the NY TV market, but NY might have more OSU, ND, and Mich fans than Rutgers fans.

I really hope that Notre Dame joins the Big 10. Keep USC, Navy and Boston College and one other team that changes every couple of years on the OOC schedule and go for it.

Am I the only one that is against expansion? I like the conference the way it is. The Big 10 already has enough exposure and makes enough money.
I guess I might be alone, in that I like not having a conference title game and divisions.

No sir, you are not alone. In fact, I'd like to see the Big Ten with just 10 teams instead of 11. Drop Northwestern, or Indiana. One of the lower tier teams, not Michigan in this instance.

Wouldn't happen. Northwestern is a charter member of the Big 10 and brings a shit ton in academic credibility to the conference. Indiana has been in the Big 10 longer than Ohio State with strong academics and geography on its side.

If anyone is the odd man out in the conf it's Penn State. But all of this is moot as conference expansion is inevitable. I'm doing division scenarios right now

Not a Big Ten fan, per se, but I like this and hope it does lead to this massive realignment. The NCAA can never force it, but once a single major conference makes the leap, the dominos will start falling. I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends up.

I'd rather see a conference where play everyone like the Pac 10 does. The superconferences are still an effect of the old SWC falling apart.

The Pac 10 isn't even going to be playing like that much longer once they invite Colorado and another school...

The University of Missouri is receiving numerous inquiries related to public speculation about conference membership. MU is a member of the Big 12 Conference and will not respond to speculation about conference realignment. Mizzou continues to be grateful for all the interest shown in and support for the university.
Update (3:54 p.m. May 10): The Lincoln Journal Star asked UNL chancellor Harvey Perlman if there was any truth to WHB's report. "None whatsoever," Perlman replied.

I'd like to see the Big Ten add 1 team, split into 2 divisions, and continue to dominate in both academics and athletics. Either way, no matter what, it is the best conference in the world when you combine successes both on the field and off.

Count me in the group of people that absolutely hate the idea of a sixteen-team conference. Twelve is perfect, and I guess fourteen is acceptable. Adding Rutgers is a joke, and Nebraska is a bit of a reach. But both will come, Rutgers knows the Big Ten is a better deal than the Big East, and the Big XII screwed Nebraska from the start so they'll gladly leave that disaster.

Which two teams will the Big XII add? Arkansas and Texas Christian? Utah? Interesting stuff to say the least.

If I were calling the shots I'd invite Missouri, Notre Dame, and Pittsburgh and cap it at fourteen.
