Hackers golf thread

There's a pro golf thread, and I'm sure there is another golf thread somewhere but I'm starting a new one.

Anyone get out yet this year?

I've been battling an elbow issue, funnily enough called golfers elbow even though I injured it lifting weights, and I was worried it would hurt too much to play. After 9 holes last night I do not think it will be an issue.

I added a new gadget over winter, a Shot Scope v3 watch with tracking tags. It automatically tracks every club you hit and how far you hit it and then compiles your statistics for you. Really cool knowing exact numbers on every shot and having access to your average distance for each club.

Anyway, the year is off to a good start for me. My first swing of the year was a 262 yard drive center fairway that I converted into a par. That was my only GIR of the day. I ended up with 4 drives of 249+ yards, one of them being into a decent wind, and a long of 277 yards. Iron shots were fine for the most part, only a couple head scratchers. Attempting to putt was useless because the greens had just been aerated and sanded and they didn't do a good job of brushing the sand. Like putting on a beach.

I'm overdue for new clubs so I scheduled a full bag fitting for next weekend. I'll probably go Maltby for my new irons because they aren't insanely expensive and are actually fantastic clubs. But I'm interested in a few of the new drivers/woods from the big guys (Callaway, Srixon, maybe Mizuno). I've never bought a new driver or wood that wasn't at least a couple years old so I'm pretty excited to see what the current tech can do for my typical miss hit.

I had to wear a tennis elbow brace for a little while with battling golfers elbow. I did some forearm exercises my buddy who is a PT for the Mariners taught me and it went away and never came back.

Ironically enough, I have a set of new (used) Ping irons being delivered today.

It'll be interesting to see how this affects my game. I started golfing in 2019 and have gotten a little bit better each year. I only get out about 8-10 times a year but I enjoy it and it fills a competitive void for me.

I have been using some old Adams a3OS irons passed down from grandfather that I believe he got new in 07 or 08. They were graphite shaft.

Hoping next week I can get out to the range and test out the irons and see how things are going.

Played in Tucson 2x during my wife’s presidents club trip in February. Got a 9 hole in before rain and it was subpar (47). Next day on a different course, I was very much par. Doubled 18 for a 74. I did play up to accommodate 2 of wife’s coworkers who were more there for fun, but was blistering the driver and irons. Wedges were a bit off, which turned some big drives into pars, but the ATG pitches also saved the few wayward irons.

I saw immediate improvement after watching a youtube video and doing some of the stretching exercises. It's rapidly improving overall and seems like it'll be gone soon.

My current irons I won as part of a golf trip to Vegas in 2019. They are Ben Hogan PTx Pros with UST Mamiya graphite shafts. They are great clubs but I need something with a little more forgiveness since I don't play as much as I did back then. My ball striking isn't consistent enough anymore.

I'm guessing I'll end up with one of these Maltby sets for my irons. I already have a 6 iron of the bottom right set as a test club that I hit pretty well. And I'm definitely going graphite in whatever set of irons I end up with.

Yeah. Golfers elbow is medial epicondylitis (inside), tennis elbow is lateral epicondylitis (outside).

Yes, one affects the outside of the elbow (tennis I think) and one the inside.  But they are both tendinitis overuse injuries.  I get golfer's elbow lifting weights from time to time.

I'm almost certain I picked mine up on the bench press.

Took some swings in the backyard the other day. I will golf some this summer. I will.
