I don't know the guy that got fired. Nor do I care but if you lose 4 games in overtime is it all coaching? Some kids know how to win and some just don't. When you play that many close games as you all say i think there is more to the X and O's. Sometimes you just ahve to look in the mirror. Scary thougth for some.

sports_talk--If you talk to pretty much anyone who attended Salem games regularly during his tenure, they'd tell you that is was mostly coaching. Problem with kids knowing how to win and others not--the ones that did were on the bench when the game was on the line.

Really, it's over, there is no point in talking about him--but X's and O's was exactly what everyone thought was his problem.

I think I'm the only one who said that--but tribepronk agreed that he'd be a good choice.

He has no varsity experience because he hasn't had the shot at a varsity job yet. He's a young guy, not far removed from college. But to get experience you have to land that first job--and like I said before, I think he's going to be a great coach for some varsity program when he does get a shot. I'd like to see it happen in Salem rather than elsewhere.

What are you talking about? Where do you come up with a statement like this? Where do you get your info? Is this a first hand eye witness account or a third party report that you garnered?

You need to ask ........... should we have even been in OT in those games, against those teams ........... maybe one at the most. That's the point, regarding that issue.

What are his qualifacations.Previous head coaching jobs.How old is Mr. King.How about career record.I don't think many people take head coaching jobs for the money anyway.I would assume this would be more of a supplemental income for him based on your statement.Does he or has he been a teacher in any system.

Previously an assistant coach in Amhurst, Canfield and a former head coach at Hubbard (not sure where else he assisted)...His dad was a long time coach at Western Reserve...Tom is in his early 30's..He runs a personal basketball development service with some of the better players in the area...He's worked with Poland throughout the off-season ever since their state finals run in 07 and has worked with other teams in the area...He's currently a social studies teacher at Hubbard High School.

Job was posted in the paper the other day -- deadline to apply is around 4/28 I think.

No reason we cannot get some great candidates .......... excellent facilities, lots of tradition (albeit somewhat dated now), and great group of returning talent.

I think Oats you have some good points on why this job would be attractive to many coaches but you leave out a reason why it is also unattractive - Whinining parents,fans and bleacher coaches who do not have a clue but think they do.The word in the valley is could be strong program but to much meddling from outside.When support lacks program slides.The outside influences are very difficult for any coach to overcome.These young men leave the gym and are subject to negative critizism(sp) who in the end do you think they are going to listen too.
Look at Boardman program loaded with talent but due to influences beyond coaches control disappointing season.On the flip side look at Canfield Program with coach Cullen,maybe not to successfull at tournament time,but over the years a hard nosed fundamentally sound team year in year out.He did not build the Ark in one year or five years he continually improved to where community,players and Administration respect what was happening between the lines.
Good Luck to Salem in their search for new coach.Only name so far heard on this sight that may be a good fit was Clark from Sebring although I am sure You will get many fine applicants

There are parents who don't understand the game in every community.
There are parents everywhere who don't realize there kid is either not as talented as they think he is; or who doesn't work hard in practice but expects to play anyway.

Get the right guy (who can deal with that 'stuff' and squelch it) and start winning and then there is little to justifiably whine about, and alot more to cheer about.

Winning changes everything.

A new candidate has just emerged on the horizon.

Brian Clark is out at Sebring, will be made official at Wednesday's BOE meeting. There is believed to be interest in him putting in for the Salem job

Could be a good hire. But if he gets hired we'll see how good of a coach he really is.

The only reason I say that is because I grew up with and played against some of those kids that played for Sebring when they were really good a few years ago, and they played in a pretty shitty conference. I think talent had a lot to do with it, I haven't really seen him accomplish much without a bunch of talent. But I mean, any new hire is pretty much a wait and see thing so it'd be that way with anyone.

Well, he'll have talent if he gets the job. From what ive heard everyone will be back, only exception might be Toothman depending on where he signs for football if they let him play bball.

Yeah, but I mean sustaining and building a program. That takes a great coach. Any GOOD coach can get some success out of a great group of talent. This program needs a great coach that knows how to build a successful program.
