Havinfun, next year's football season is more realistic. The Smithie community sure hopes it is basketball season though, especially his classmates. Not only is he an outstanding athlete, but already a leader as a sophomore.

Any news on Lint, Mckean?

According to leaguechamps10 in the Mogadore @ Northwestern thread, McKean played last week. He only mentioned him playing DB, so I am not sure if he played on offense or not.

That is a real shame for the Bates kid. To miss one sport is bad enough but to miss the entire year and two sports is really tough. I have only seen him a few times on the court and he was special.

I was hoping that this would be a season of WCAL dominance, but so far mediocrity has reigned. Two straight 4-4 weeks have left the league 8-8 in out of conference play. It's still somewhat early, so it's premature to say that the league is weak, but nobody with half a brain is calling the WCAL strong.

I still see a wide open race for the league crown. Dalton, Hillsdale, Norwayne, Northwestern, Smithville and Waynedale all have the potential to walk off the field on week 10 hoisting the hardware.

Rittman & Chippewa still have some growing to do. No offense to either tribe or that kick ass unit of nutbusters known as the Rittman alumni band!

Hopefully the WCAL can get 2 or 3 teams to postseason. That might be wishful thinking because as of right now my gut tells me nobody will go undefeated in league play and nobody will survive week 11.
Then again, my gut told me LBJ was staying in Cleveland....so take it for what its worth---not much.

I almost posted similar thoughts yesterday Red Rum. I think it is fairly obvious that the WCAL is a fun league to watch but there will be no state qualifying teams for at least the next five years. I don't even see a round two team this year. For this reason I think scheduling your non-conference as tough as possible is the best way to go. Get used to faster, better teams. Find out what you have while playing a lot of kids and enter league play healthy and ready to go.
I would add Rittman to the mix as contenders because they have a solid senior class.
I expect NW will pull a mild upset against Mogadore tomorrow which will boost the leagues image.
Smithville could beat a down St. Thomas team.
I hope the Bears can be competitive at Triway.
Tuslaw will destroy Chippewa. This could be a 50-60 point win for them.
Rittman should win against Sandy Valley who lost to a weak Indian Valley team in week one.
Norwayne will beat Black River
Hillsdale will beat Loudenville
Dalton should win.
This should be a 6-2 or 5-3 week for the WCAL.

I am new to the wcl thread. Actally i have been an OC member for about 4 weeks but i ave been stuck on the 55 page "boob" thread over on the serious business page.
Anyway i see another 4-4 week for the WCAL with Waynedale ,Smithville , Doylestown and NW being on the losing end. I hope I am wrong though.

So what you're saying is we should schedule easy teams our first 3 games and not think about the playoffs because we won't even get to the second round......REALLY?? You want to sit at home week 11, go right ahead............it's FOOTBALL not dance class......

Last but not least........Dalton will win tomorrow night against Timken......

Dude. What are you smoking?????? Do you seriously think Northwestern, Waynedale, and Smithville have a chance. I see this year as a two team race with the Bulldogs hoisting the hardware after week 8.

Hey bleed...news flash- your one sprained ankle away from being average at best. You have a stud QB who has big play ability due to his speed and maneuverability-take him out of your line up and you wont be hoisting squat. Good Luck tonight

I'm smoking my homegrown of course......and yes, I think no less than 6 teams still have a shot at winning the WCAL. Hillsdale & Dalton probably have the best chance, but I can't rule the others out. Strange things can happen in league play, just ask Hillsdale. The Falcs were celebrating their first title after slapping the Dawgs down, only to get their eyes blackened and their title hopes dashed by Northwestern & Waynedale.

Were both entitled to our opinions and yours may be right, however, don't count your titles before you win them because the WCAL of 2010 is more even than it has ever been. Anyway, Good Luck to the orange & black and stay healthy.

Leaguechamps - your argument is yea, you guys are good, but if someone gets hurt you're gonna be in trouble? Who isn't one sprained ankle away from mediocrity in this league? It has been a very good start for Dalton without their best player that they hope to have back. People have seemed very unimpressed about their win against deep Tuslaw team. That being said, I think the huskies are definitely a team that can win the wcl. Right now it looks like the front runners are the bulldogs,falcons, bobcats, and huskies (with mckean). I still feel the cats year is 2011, and I am not counting out the smithies and bears, but they just seem to not quite be at that level this year. Rittman is intriguing, but they have a lot to prove. But hey, its early yet.

Here is my public service announcement for you......

Since this is your first time playing at Fawcett a few tips.

Parking is easy especially on the north side of the stadium. Parking on the north side is a much shorter walk to your side.

Don't sit too close to the field. There are no sidelines there and if you sit too close you will be looking over an around your players on the sidelines.

Take extra pocket money. A hot dog at most stadiums is $1.50 at Fawcett expect to pay at least $2.50.

Enjoy the experience. You can look into the HOF from behind your seats. The replays on the Jumbotron are awesome.

Tell your kids to be careful on the turf. It is a different game.

In my fruitless attempts to draw a correlation between the WCAL's out of conference record and the number of teams that make the playoffs, I came up with some WCAL fun facts...interesting but not very supportive of my failed theory.

Out of Conference record since 2002 (2010 not included)
Smithville...17-7

Dalton, Hillsdale & Norwayne...15-9
Rittman...9-15
Chippewa...7-17

My theory was the more OOC wins, the more teams in the playoffs. My thinking was shallow and flawed. My new theory is...The WCAL probably gets at least 2 teams in regardless of OOC record mostly because we are represented in 3 divisions and 4 regions.

The stats were done in somewhat of a hurry. I hope they are correct but I have made mistakes before.

Luckydog - what I am saying is there isn't a WCAL school with the talent over the next few years to contend for a state title. I would play the best competition in my non-league games not for playoff points but to get better for league play. Playing a weak schedule with teams like Conotton Valley and Mapleton do nothing for either playoff points or to help your team improve.
Would you rather win the WCAL or finish second and get destroyed in Week 11? I'll take the league title everytime.
Last year Smithville and NW got punished by a good Mogadore Team. Mogadore was humiliated in the playoffs by eventual state champ Norwalk St. Paul and that was in D-VI. My point is for the time being, the WCAL is not at the same level as Ursaline, Coldwater, Delphos St. Johns, etc . I see no evidence down through jr. high levels that that will change anytime soon.
Why don't you share who is going to contend for a state title in the coming few years and we will see who is right?
I do think Rittman will notch at least one win against Hillsdale, Dalton and Norwayne this year.

1486 I agree. I was not tooting NW horn nor was I dissin the Bulldogs. To be very honest I think this league is wide open-I just hope we all dont cancel each other out! There are very good athletes on all the teams-some schedules non-conference wise are brutal (Smithies) some are creampuffs (Rittman). And I dont want my comments to be taken out of context about Dalton-I think Hackett is more valuable to that team than Lint and no-I dont want him to get hurt either (bad choice of words earlier for an example). As the old sayin goes to be the man you gotta beat the man! And as of right now Daltons still the team to beat! Good Luck to all WCAL teams tonight.

First of all I didn't say ANY WCAL team will contend for a state title in 5 years, I just asked the question back. Heck, it may be ten years who knows. It sounds like you have all the answers.
Second, why would anyone in our league schedule Mogadore or Delphos for computer points that they will never get after a butt whoppin? I believe in playing good, solid competition, but not someone that is going to beat your brains out before league play.
Third, I will take the title and week eleven every time. Smart scheduling will still get you to week eleven without deflating the boys playing way over their heads. We play Timken for points and they're not so good, just a DII school.
Fourth, if Rittman beats Dalton, I will wear a Rittman T-shirt to the following weeks game. Neither will happen this year. I am happy however for their program getting some wins under their belt. I can see them going 5-5 this year, maybe 6-4.

I agree with lucky dog about Rittman, don't thing they can beat the dogs yet this year. Our backup qb is pretty good; a sophmore, as was Hackett when he started Varsity.

I wouldnt schedule Mogadore for computer points. I would schedule them to show my kids what a good high school program looks like and get my team ready for the WCAL. Hey I think Dalton is a great team this year. They are by far the best skill team in the league.
