1. Can you get a decent machine for under $1000 or will it be junk?
2. How noisy are they? I am on a 2nd floor apt and don't wanna piss off my neighbors.

I have a Precor. I bought the same model I was using at the gym. I bought it on sale for around $4,000. I wouldn't go to cheap. I know a few people that have bought cheap ones and say they are hard on the knees. When I bought mine they had a three year same as cash deal, so I paid a little a month until I paid it off. If you find one for $1,000 I would check the reviews online before you purchase to see what others say about it.

I used to sell them. You can't buy a decent one for less than 2k.

You can get a decent one for under $1,000. I work at Sports Authority and we've one that is under a grand that is pretty nice. The biggest thing when it comes to an elliptical is that it should feel comfortable to you. No point in spending $2800 on a machine that doesn't even feel smooth to you.
We bought this one and really like it. Built pretty solidly and no problems after about a year of use.

Thing about PTing at home.......
Can be too many distractions.
lets say you get one for 1000. My gym is 24/7 and cost 30 bucks a month. $360/year and I get all that shit to do to not get bored. Three years of gym membership = 1 ok eliptical.
Id go with teh gym. I read a study once of the percentage of elipticals/treadmills and such taht are sitting at home wtih very little to no use and it was staggering.
I think one would get sick of it every day or as their main workout.
Agree with some others...buy some running shoes.....go run....and/or join gym. You have a diff mentality toward working out when you go to the gym than trying at home.
