I've seen five of the nominated films.

District 9
Avatar
The Hurt Locker
Inglorious Basterds
Up in the Air

Of those I'd say Avatar just for being an experience like nothing before.

I really like District 9. But I haven't seen the rest, so I can't really comment.

IB better not win. I thought it really wasn't that great. I think Avatar will win but, I'd like to see District 9 take it.

Avatar probably should win. The academy looks very highly upon films that employ revolutionary technological advances on a grand scale. The Hurt Locker was fantastic, but the scale, scope and execution of Avatar will probably give it an edge.

I saw Avatar, Inglorious Basterds, District 9, and Up. Of those, IB was the best with Avatar next. Will be seeing the Hurt Locker this week to see how deserving it was of the Best Picture nod. Avatar had no business winning the award to begin with and it's no surprise that it didn't.

Haven't seen The Hurt Locker, but I do want to and I'm guessing it deserved the win. I thought District 9 was very good and I thought the way the movie was put together and what it stood for was fantastic.

I'd say Inglorious Basterds was the best film of the ones I saw. District 9 was really good as well. Avatar was more popcorn movie than quality film, imo.

I saw all of those except Up in the Air..

Out of those, I'd go..

1. The Hurt Locker (Simply amazing, intense, and very well done.)
2. District 9 (I really loved this movie. It had a political backdrop to it, but the overall movie was well executed and left me wanting another one.)
3. Avatar (great movie and visuals, but the plot wasn't "Best picture worthy"
4. Inglorious Basterds (Loved this movie, but the Basterds weren't featured enough, imo)

District 9 was the best movie of the year, hands down.

Avatar had literally out-of-this-world graphics, but that was is. The plot wasn't mediocre, it was poor.

The Hurt Locker was solid, that was it.

Inglorious Basterds was solid too, but nowhere near Best Picture-worthy. The plot on this one lacked, but then again I'm not a big fan of historical fiction.

Yeah, movies don't seem to rely on the actors acting much these days.
So instead, they try to wow you with sensational graphics and gunfire and flash cut scenes to take your mind off of the fact that there's not a whole lot of "acting" going on.
It's a shame, really.

Most of the people on this message board would never consider seeing a movie like Precious but it had what I believe to be some of the best acting I have ever seen. Mo'nique as the mother was a performance that was incredible. To have a character that you absolutely hate and then actually have compassions for, while still hating, is good acting. She certainly deserved the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

People aren't seeing the right movies if they honestly think the quality of acting is going "down."

For some reason people think that everything used to be better. Music sucks now, movies suck now, athletes suck now, books suck now, art sucks now.

I really don't get why people always think the past was better.

There is a widespread tendency in western cultures to over sentimentalize the past way out of proportion. Can't really explain why that is the case though. I am sure studies have been done on this, just don't have the desire to rummage through databases looking for them.

Now hold on. Nobody is saying that all of the movies of the past are better than what is being made today.

You guys sure can make some giant leaps, eh?

What I in particular said, and mean, was that today's movie-making is focusing alot more on special effects (ex: computer animation), quick flash scenes and such and it takes alot of focus off of the acting.
It's undeniably the trend, lately. Well, I mean you can deny it if you want to, I suppose...
