My dad and I only rooted for the same college team = Ohio State
NFL: Me = Browns Dad = Raiders
MLB: Me = Indians Dad = Tigers
NBA: Me = Cavs Dad hated the NBA
NHL: Me = Red Wings Dad really didn't care for the NHL
We both loved international sports though whether it was hockey, basketball, soccer, etc...you would find us bother cheering on the USA!!

My father passed away quite some time ago, but my fondest memories are watching or going to games with him.
My first Indians game was the final season Mickey Mantle played. I got to see him hit a home run, too.
My first OSU football game was the Oregon Ducks (timely) against Rex Kern and the Super Sophs of 1968 who went on to win the national title.
My first OSU basketball game was Jimmy Cleamons last home game against Indiana, and the Buckeyes won to win the Big Ten title that day.
My first Browns game was against the NY Giants and Fran Tarkenton. It was glorious to sit with more than 80,000 other fans and watch a decent Browns squad plant his ass into the turf more than once.
Obviously, I've retained those allegiances (although I don't follow baseball, anymore).
Whenever the Buckeyes or Browns win a big game, I always think of my Dad and hope he's getting to enjoy those games with one of the best seats in the "house".

My dad actually follows the same teams as me. Growing up, he didn't follow sports too much. My love for them, me taking him to games and inviting him up to watch games has converted him. Now, he is a big Cubs, Bears & Illini fan...as is my mother (same situation).
If you go back to my grandfather, then I can say yes. Cubs, Bears, Bulls and Illini....I must have gotten it from him.

For the most part we do.
He likes:
Indiana basketball
Notre Dame football
Yankees and Indians
Bears, Colts and Browns
Red Wings (although he doesnt really follow hockey)
Pacers and Cavs
I Like:
Indiana Basketball
Notre Dame Football
Indians
Colts and Browns
Pacers and Cavs
Red Wings
We really only differ in baseball. He loves the Indians (best friend is Bob Dibiasio) but would cheer for the Yankees over the Tribe. Same with the Colts and Bears. I love the Colts and Browns but would choose the Colts. He likes the Bears, then Colts, then Browns.
Neither of us love the NBA...but we both like the Pacers and Cavs. Lucky, one is always good while the other sucks so we have never had to choose...lol

My father passed away a few months ago at the age of 96. He was Steubenville Big Red's greatest fan. I share his enthusiasm.
We also liked the Steelers and Pirates and hated Ohio State.

My dad grew up in Alliquipa (sp) so naturally he liked the squeelers. I grew up in Massillon, so, for me, the Browns. My dad didn't like Baseball or basketball, except for the teams I was on. I have always been a homer, Tribe and Cavs. We both liked boxing, he says Joe Louis was the best ever. Even as a kid I was a huge homer but I was enamored with the Dodgers, Garvey, Cey, Yeager, Lopes, Sutton etc....
But If the Tribe played them in the series, I would have cheered for the Tribe
Same with the NBA, as a kid, enamored with the Sixers, Erving, Jones, Mo Cheeks, Chocolate thunder and later Moses Malone etc....But again, if Cavs met em in EC finals, I'd have had to cheer for the Cavs.
Also growing up, I really liked Walter Payton and Earl Campbell, but not when the Browns played them.

My dad has been gone for 35 years and didn't follow sports much, BUT he did instill in me to always support the home team. And I carry on that tradition, not only with me, but with my 6 kids.
BRF will ALWAYS support:
The Browns
The Indians
The Cavs (and before the Cavs, it was the Cincinnati Royals)
Ohio State
And, of course, the Orrville Red Riders!
Something happened along the way in my life with others, and I had it verified by posters on this thread..........where father's permitted their little boys to follow "front runners"...........and I'm going to stop right there, because I've gotten into A LOT of arguments on this one.
Home team........through thick and thin.
oh, and one other thing, I am very sorry to the posters who have had dads that ditched them AND........to the one's who have recently lost their fathers.

Since somebody mentioned boxing, I should also point out that my father was a big fan of Jack Dempsey. My parents and I got to meet him once in his restaurant in New York. I think it was one of the biggest thrills my Dad ever had.

Absolutely. My entire family are huge Ohio State, Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati Bengals, and Cleveland Cavs fans. The only one of those that wouldn't be considered the "home" team might be the Cavs. While they are the home state team, we are definitely closer to Indianapolis and the Pacers. I grew up a Reggie Miller fan, but not a Pacers fan.

absolutely. It's a father's privledge and duty to raise his kids properly. If I tried to root for some team from another city or state over the the local teams he would have kicked my ass.

I think the best parent is the parent who allows their child to root for the team they choose to root for and not force feed them on whom they should like.

Not exactly.
The only team that was ever on in my household growing up was OSU. So I am as big of an OSU fan as there is.
But it was up to me to figure out who my teams were. It's funny though, because now at 25 and my dad being 56, I find him cheering for my teams more than anything. lol
