Wow! Great win for the Cards. I didn't really see this one coming. Congratulations to Struthers on a fine season, but I hate to tell some of the Struthers fans that "I told you so". I really thought that Struthers would come away with the victory tonight, but I claimed earlier this season that they were yet to be considered one of the valley's elite. Zombienation inquired why this team wasn't getting any respect, but to go 18-2 in the regular season and then bow out in the district semis is the reason some people aren't ready to throw them into discussion with Poland, Campbell, Canfield, and Harding just yet. Yes, I know that Canfield lost in the first round of the District this year, but they were competing in division 1. Although Struthers had a great season, they really didn't have any big time victories and the loss to Mooney will sort of leave a sour ending to an impressive year regarding their record. Irregardless, the young men and the coaching staff should be commended on their accomplishments this year. This program is definitely headed in the right direction, but I think they are just a year or two away.
As far as the district final goes.....I think this will be a very tough game for the Dogs. Mooney plays a very similar style as Canfield and actually beat them earlier this season. Considering how closely Canfield played Poland and how much these two programs dislike each other, I really think that Mooney will give Poland all that they can handle. I'm hoping that FatMatt is right and that Poland's pressure will be too much for the Cards of Mooney to overcome. Whoever wins will certainly represent the Boardman district well in the regional. Here's to hoping for a safe game for both teams and hopefully a little luck on Poland's side
I agree with this post, besides the fact that you mention Canfield as a valley elite. Maybe in football, but until they win some games in the tournament they are suppossed to be in, I put them in the same boat as Struthers.
Anyways, great season boys! 19-3 is a remarkable season, anyway you look at it. It's kind of sad that it had to end like this, considering that Struthers was one of the best free throw shooting teams in the area all season and they were awful from the stripe against Mooney. I think what it came down to, is the fact that a few players from Struthers had to carry the team all game (Nate Jacubec, Adam Ryczaj) and were sucking wind when they were going to the free throw line. Also, Coach Sav ended the game with 3 T.O.'s he could've used to give his players a rest. However, I am in no way blaming anyone mentioned in this post as why Struthers lost. They were outplayed for 3/4 quarters.
Best of luck Poland, and I hear that the Struthers student section has one last hoorah for the Mooney faithful
