No snow we go! wrote: My guess... Enough people were upset that a few schools voted no, so they acted like a school girl getting felt up at the drive in for the first time... and said we will not join the league if everyone does not want us."

Too bad, I think it would have been interesting as a whole (all the sports)
Well, you have to admit that we did not exactly get a warm welcome. Two of the five teams we would play in football voted no.

I would like to see Big Red schedule New Philly and expect to play Dover in the playoffs. The rest of the league doesn't offer us much in football.

I highly doubt very many teams get a unanimous decision into a league. That's just a cop out, IMO. Who cares who voted no. They were voted in nonetheless, AFTER seeking an invitation.

Of course Marietta was going to vote no! They'd be crazy to vote yes to that. Marietta left the SEOAL b/c of economics and travel times. Who would expect them to vote a yes to the addition of a longer drive for them? They'd just be heading back in the direction they were in when they were in the SEOAL.

If that is the reason they didn't join, then another poster was right with the 'school girl' mentality. 'Boo hoo...they don't like me...so I'm not gonna play!'

A real shocker! William Kerr resigned from the Steubenville School Board. He was the main driving force behind Big Red Athletics over many years and will be hard to replace. His influence with the other members gained many projects relating to the Athletic Department. Coach Reno could always count on his backing.
Strange this announcement comes only 2 days after the hassle over joining the ECOL. Could there be a tie-in here? It is starting to look like certain parties may have been over-ruled on the ECOL matter; that being, accepting the invite without prior approval.
In any event, his resignation could be a big blow to Big Red Athletics.
Stay tuned.
Cheers[/align]

I doubt if his resignation will make much of a difference to the football program. It makes too much money to be ignored.

What has Reno done that could be objectionable? He runs a clean program and he wins. Every school in the country would like to have him.

You can't prove that he has or hasn't.

How did their "open enrollers" show up? Was it him, assistants, school board, free will? You can't prove it regardless of who did (or didn't) do it.

Now that Kerr is retiring I can see Reno looking for the same thing. Retirement for good. There is no love lost between the two. Free will ...isn't that what this world is built upon ? I have personally talked to two of the "open enrollers" they came because they want to play ball and go to college. If there is a chance for either..... I would enroll in BR also.
Since you BR haters like to throw stones, why don't you come down to the school and talk to the kids.

I didn't say Reno did anything objectionable. It's important to know that one of the strongest backers of B.R. athletics has resigned. If you have followed Big Red over the years, you may recall that some of our schoolboard members in the past weren't too thrilled with the attention given to the athletic program and some of the teams in the 50's showed that. Bill was an All-Ohio lineman at B.R. and knew what was needed to make up a good program.
Bill was not the only supporter on the board and Bill's replacement may also be supportive. It's a wait and see situation of how this all plays out.
Cheers

It said in the paper that Mr. Kerr's retirement from the BOE was because he was going to relocate.

He lives right by me, and it's sad to see another Big Red alum/supporter leave the area.

Hopefully his replacement on the BOE will be someone like minded. I'm hoping it will be one of my friends.

Anybody who is familiar with Steubenville Schools know this issue will be swept under the carpet. That's just the way they do things. The real reason will not be told to the public. That is their right. It does seem odd that Mr. Kerr is stepping down from the board 2 days after Big Red changes their mind and pulls out of the ECOL. I doubt if the remaining members of the ECOL are losing sleep over Big Red deciding not to play in the league.

Yea, I'm sure Big Red sports declining to be in a league (we haven't been in a league since 88) has something to do with Mr. Kerr retiring. Come on people, get real!

I would still like to know what happened. The guy I spoke with at Channel 9 said he thinks Big Red is bluffing, that we are just trying to get a better deal and then we'll join. This seems strange to me. It seems to me that all this would have been taken care of before they voted on us.

A better deal?!?! We are not buying a car.

Either the school wants to take on the travel or they don't.

To me it's silly to travel all over eastern Ohio to play games when for the most part we can get the same competition within the OVAC.

And I don't see it all that beneficial for football either, since we would still have to find 5 teams (4 of them coming to Death Valley every year) to play.

This was not known before they applied????
Spin it how you want.
Big Red asked to join and now seems to want to back out.

Something smells!

As I have found out dealing with the school system, just because you have one or two people's approval to do something does not mean that you have the green light until it goes to the Athletic Board and sometimes the BOE.

And just because you send in an inquiry to join a league doesn't mean that you are obligated to join. You can ask someone to marry you, but still reconsider once she accepts and before you get down the aisle.

Yea but when one of those people's approval's is Reno's that's about a 99.9% success rate. So again, what did they learn in the last week to make him change his mind, or what was so important that the others in the loop all told him no?

In my dealings with Reno he is not a stubborn person in matters like this. If others brought up valid points about joining the league, then he would listen to their point of view.

Heck, he even asks the Boosters their opinions on certain things.

He is not a tyrant.

We here in Massillon will trade you Lisa Carmicheal for your Board seat, (she has SuperIntendent experience, and is from your area), and all we ask for in return is a diet coke.

But when the bride stands up the groom at the altar, most people are going to think she's a b**** regardless of her rationale.

I think a Diet Coke is a little steep. We had her as a super and we were not impressed here at Edison.
Things are much better here now. Not perfect but moving in the right direction.

So you would enter into that union and spend the rest of your life being miserable just so people wouldn't think bad about you???

Too bad Big Red can't join the WPIAL. The competition would be better and the driving distances would be shorter.
