If you look around the country, the one thing that all the elite programs have is a great defense, that's what ND needs.

Pretty solid last couple of days for the Irish. Looks like Kelly and Tony Alford are doing a great job of starting a Florida pipeline.

yep i do remember that they WON their BCS game with Stewart....which goes to show you can win without your coach.....keep them insults coming, they are giving me a laugh

Yep that is true right there....but WVU has not been much of a threat in the Big East since he left.....much before of Pitt, and Cincy....Now we will have to wait and see where Cincy goes with Kelly leaving.

Insults? I think it's an accurate description rather than an insult.

I'm laughing at how incredibily DENSE you are.......does everything have to be spelled out for you? If ND had an invite to a upper tier bowl game then maybe, they would have accepted it. If they were good enough to make a BCS Bowl game then Weis would have never been fired. Finally, there's no way any team is turning down a BCS Bowl game, even if their coach has left for another program. Understand or should I post some flash cards for you?

It wasn't just because they were getting rid of Weis, it was how they finished the season. They were 6-2 and I am pretty sure ranked in the Top 25. They go on to lose the next 4 games and finish the season at 6-6, and they only beat 2 teams with a winning record at season end.

The players know Longo's track record: His teams are 42-1 since 2005 when leading after three quarters.
Sounds to me like his teams are in superior condition compared to their opponents. Call me biased, but with conditioning like that, 6-6 would've been 11-1 last year. Anywho, news about Longo said he was essentially ahead of the curve even when at Cincinnati, so maybe Notre Dame's OL and entire team will see an improvement. It would explain a lot of how guys just didn't seem to develop fully under Weis.

That's not the reason why they didn't accept a bowl bid last year. In 2008, ND lost 4 of their last 5 games, including an ass whipping at USC (lost 5 of last 7), finished 6-6 and accepted the Aloha Bowl bid.

When they fired Weis, it was the right move IMO not to play a bowl game. When ND fired Willingham, they accepted a bowl bid that year and went on to lose a game that meant nothing to the program. The extra practice time didn't matter either because they would be in an entirely different system the next year.

You could make the argument that Brian Kelly was able to implement his system in time to win the bowl game for Cincinnati before his first year. But that is very rare and in my opinion only speaks to how good of a coach he may be.

Fact of the matter is Notre Dame blew it in 2009. They were indeed 6-2 after eight games, with the two losses being by 4 and 7 points, respectively. It looked like they could have been 8-0 at that time. Then they shat down their leg and went 0-4, losing by 2, 5, 3, and 7 points, respectively. They simply blew a tremendous opportunity to play in a BCS bowl or even run the table with the offensive talent and schedule they had that season.

At the end of the day Notre Dame didn't have anything to gain by playing in a bowl game. I don't see what the big deal is. It may or may not be a rare thing for a school to turn down a bowl bid, but with how prevalent bowls are these days it will become more and more common for teams have coaching changes. It would not have been advantageous for the program to go ahead and lose to a "6-6 hapless WAC team," which is the truth and to be honest not that big of a team.

Let's say Tressel got fired after the 7-4 regular season in 2004, if the coaching search went into December, it's not like there wouldn't have been a discussion to say "fuck the Alamo Bowl" if an interim head coach was there.

Yeah well just remember "half of us are below average" when dealing with some posters on here.

Anywho, back to current Notre Dame news. I read more into the new commits, some thoughts:

I wouldn't be surprised if the 4* DE, Aaron Lynch, ended as a 5* by February. According to Scout.com he had offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Florida, etc. He's 6'5 and they said he was still growing and that he doesn't have tremendous form. That translates into a shitload of potential and his senior year could put him into the 5* category. Granted, I think stars are completely moot, but it'd be neat.

The 4* RB, Justice Hayes, sounds like a cocky son of a bitch. But with offers from Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Tennessee, he sounded like a quality back. I'm excited to see him fit into Kelly's system, apparently he does very well in it right now.

The 3* DE, Anthony Rabasa, has me scratching my head. He's only 6'3, which is nothing to write home about, and is only a 3* right now, but garnered offers from the southern recruiting powerhouses (Florida, LSU, Florida State, Miami, etc.) outside of Alabama. I found that awfully suspicious, in a good way. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up at a 4* by February.

The 3* CB, Jalen Brown, seems like a nice pickup, nothing more. I do like that he is 6'1 and plays CB. Offers from Nebraska and Wisconsin look good though, but nothing special.

Yes, I know its not a big accomplishment to be bowl eligible..but if i was a senior on that team, there is no way I would want to end my career on a 4 game losing streak, especially if im probably not going to make the pros. Just my opinion..
