Graduated in '08, haven't been able to find a job yet (Early Childhood), and goin into the 3rd summer of applying, I'm not very optimistic about finding anything. Tried all of Ohio and N.C.
Question is, have any of you ever considered taking part in the Teaching Abroad programs? Seems like they have a lot of positions available. Saw some information on it, looked kind of interesting. Just curious if anyone has done it or thought about it before.

Not yet but will be looking for a Health or Phys. Ed job here in about a year/year and a half

I'm actually quitting the education degree pursuit at Wright State. I'm a few quarters away from completing undergrad, but unfortunately I'll be lucky to start the master's program without too much delay in 2011. Realistically, I wouldn't graduate with my masters until late 2012 (best case scenario)

It's absolutely ridiculous that they require masters degrees for teachers, then the salaries are a joke.

i know places like texas, vegas, baltimore area are always looking...if you want to guarantee yourself a job go back and get a special ed certificate or limited english endorsement. are you looking only in ohio? i know many states are in shortage of teachers.

It isn't only teachers who have that issue.

I was down in NC and applied in every county down there last summer. Special Ed has crossed my mind, had a friend who was Early Ed and she applied for that, the school turned around and said we'll give you a provisional license if you teach Sp. Ed here...and got a job. Hoping that situation lands in my lap this summer haha.

Really? I'm happy with mine. What SHOULD a teacher make? It's attitudes like this that have brought our country where we are. We all want more, more, MORE, and we want it right now.

Yes, that is capitalism, but I think we have the idea of capitalism misconstrued. Instead of going out there and making that million, we want it to come from our employers.

I was getting ready to say "Well, this wouldn't be the place where teachers and students go to hook up if there weren't any teachers, would it?", but you stole my thunder.

Although, as you can tell, I still made the joke anyway...cuz that's how I roll. :cool:

Say what now?

As far as the salary, I'd give my right arm to have a steady job and make 28k to do something I love and teach, have a great benefit package, and retirement package vs. waking up every morning hoping to find a sub job that day.

If you don't care where the job is you should try Hawaii. Seriously, they need teachers.

I work with a guy that taught in Hawaii. He said that it is nice and all, but the cost of living is so high that it makes it tough.

Cost of living is incredible. Milk is like $8 a gallon and a place to live is crazy expensive.

Please explain this. Teachers get paid very well here in Ohio considering the benefits and summers off.

It depends where in the state you are located. In several areas of the state, the first year teaching salary is only in the $20,000's. I agree that the pay is fair once you get more years in, but the entry pay is very low in many parts of Ohio.

A friend told me that she is looking into moving to florida once she finishes her masters. Apparently there are quite a few teaching positions down there?

Lots of jobs require Masters degrees, yet you don't make much after getting that masters.

Many social work positions require an MSW, and they certainly aren't making big bucks.

Most librarians, archivists, and other information folks, need a Masters in Library and Information Science, or the equivalent. They certainly don't make a lot unless they move into a higher-level administrative, management, or research/professor position within the field.

I understand that teachers should possibly get paid a little bit more, but so should other positions, if we're going to use the logic that "i need a masters degree, and should get paid more."

Not to mention that salary shouldn't be the end all, be all for why people enter into a profession.

Also, seems like special education teachers are doing pretty well in Ohio.

My twin brother and his fiancee are both special ed certified, have their masters degrees in education, and had numerous offers from schools throughout central Ohio and the Cleveland area.

Maybe think about getting certified in special ed?

*Hawaii- have friends who live out there, gorgeous to live out they they said...but as stated, you end up not really making much money with how high the cost of living is

*Florida- actually had an offer from West Palm Beach schools right out of college, which sounds awesome on the surface...but again, once you look into the salary they offered (29k) and again price of living down there..it's cheaper to stay here and sub hoping to find a job.

Might try Texas this summer, also heard Minn. is looking for teachers too.
