Sure, we have problems in the US...but not this catastrophic.

This was my first thought when I read the status message the other day. Yes, we have problem in the US, and yes we should be taking care of those problems, and we do every day. There are umpteen charity organizations out there that are working all the time to help people and we even do have telethons to help people here in the US who need help. However, there was a natural disaster in a country with no infrastructure, money, or natural resources. As a human being I feel for these people and am compelled to help them. Also, any time any country, no matter how insignificant it may be, goes through something like this, it affects our economy, and while that may be a selfish reason to help them out it is also a legitimate one.

I've said it once, and I'll say it again. We spend 600 BILLION on welfare every year, we have thousands of programs to help the poverty strickened citizens of this country. It's not like we've completely given up on our fellow americans. Food drives happen every single day, somewhere in this country. To say we don't help our own is short sighted at best. As the most powerful nation in the world, we have a responsibility to help where needed. The money we've given/donated/raised for Haiti is a drop in the bucket compared to what we do everyday for fellow Americans. I certainly wish people would at least somewhat educate themselves before they speak foolishly!

One thing no one ever mentions is that the people in Haiti were not effected because of poor decisions in their life.

People on welfare/homeless had chances to not make changes to their lives, the people of Haiti had no choice.

Speaking of what seems to be uneducated people being the one to spread this message, I see Belly has started a Haiti thread.

As was mentioned in Belly's thread..with the government in Haiti being as corrupt as it is..who is to say that all this money will get to the people anyways?
