"......allow the auto makers to fill jobs vacated by older workers who leave or retire with new hires earning a little more than $14 an hour on average—about half what current workers received when they started. Newer workers also get reduced benefits. "
Did the UAW concede to reduced pensions or reductions of gold-plated health insurance costs that are sucking wind from the automakers? If not it appears that Big Union is just as supportive of generational theft as "Big Government." There was a fantastic, and fairly evenhanded, article in the AP several months ago following the stories of 3 generations of UAW workers (for Ford in Michigan to my recollection) that showcases this trend. The "grandfather" was a retiree, union leader and political advocate that enjoyed a lifetime of high wages, weekends hunting, playing golf and visiting the beach, ample vacation time and complete retirement security, the "father" who was in his 40's that was anxious about the future of the company and was contemplating accepting a buy-out, and the early 20-ish "son" that didn't go to college (family were always UAW people that would take care of him) that was struggling to maintain an entry level wage (which was probably close to $14/hour) and was wondering if he would ever make enough to support a family.
Again, the article was very fair, it didn't paint any of them as bad, lazy or overly ignorant, but it did show the cluelessness of all generations that this golden egg could last forever without ramifications or consequences, and evidenced that regardless of the propaganda machine Big Labor perpetuates, unions are not there to support ALL workers, just the workers in power and are politically connected.
