Those kinds of statements will get you into a circular argument with those who lean towards children's rights vs. those of us who believe in adult/parental authority. We take offense at lippy kids, but if you hold them responsible or reprove them, you are violating the child in some way and doing something you have no right to do. I don't think any child should ever be abused, but I think every child should be disciplined. Kids have to be held to some standard of acceptable behavior. It's as simple as this: someone has to be in charge. I'd suggest adults and parents are the better choice than the kids. I had a lippy kid in my house... once. Now that he's 22, he's glad I didn't tolerate that. I always was glad about it.

...or you might be infringing on the parent's actions to discipline the child. It appears the ref/adult did his job. Now the parent should be afforded the ability to do their's.

I completely agree with you regarding your concern for your daughter in the above situation. I completely agree with you that we as a community of adults have a responsibility and dare I say obligation to police, monitor and guide all children and youth within our reach. I completely disagree with touching another child to turn them, get their attention or even make them aware we would like to discuss or make a point to them.

Far worse is to then publicly advertise the scenario on a bulletin board for others' entertainment. There are many ways* to improve the respect and character of our youth....probably as many as there are adults with an opinion. Our opinions, yours and mine, clearly differ with regard to your approach and actions following this incident.

And there it is. Yours is a legitimate viewpoint shared by many.

I think there is. Certainly I have learned from yours that we mustn't lessen but rather should seek to heighten the obligation we have to ensure children in our community understand what respectful behavior is in public.

What I truly don't get it is the willingness to publicize on a forum such incidents. Maybe by doing so it continues to bring awareness to our need to reach out and guide these kids. I am going to go with that for now.

Based on your last "question" are we to now believe your purpose for creating this thread was to publicize it as a public service so others might learn from it?? Con Alma...do you currently have or have in the past raised children of your own? My suspicion is NO...and if you did Lord Help Them as they try to actually make it in the real world.

I have one three sport High School female and a two sport Junior High male.

More important are that they each have the appropriate attitude and effort regarding meeting their full potential academically.

Their time is focused around family, education, athletics, social life, and the time required by their school and church in obtaining a certain number of volunteer hours. All of those efforts center around their spiritual development. Thank you for asking about them. It's always flattering to a parent to be asked about their children.

What was it that concerns you about my posts seeing how 95% of them agree with Pariah.

My posts were constructed to seek clarity of Pariah's view. It's been my experience that it is clarity that often solves problems and assists in educating us all.

I have had this situation come up in one of my games before at the JV level. A row of guys was saying some really, really inappropriate things to a girl, turned out to be a freshman after looking at the roster after the game, and I wasn't going to tolerate it. Kicked the entire row out.

I have done both boys and girls games and I am AMAZED at the sexist comments I hear from EVERYONE in the girls games opposed to the guys games. Totally uncalled for.

Why wait? Would the remarks have been acceptable, had they been directed toward a 16 year old junior in high school? If the comments were that bad, throw them out without checking the roster. What's the difference?

No no, I guess I just wanted to point out how young she in fact was. The guys yelling the stuff knew that about her, so that made it even worse to me after the game. It didn't matter to me at the time whether she was a 7th grader in a junior high game or a Senior in a varsity game.

If a player does not hit the rim or backboard after a shot and the other teams fans start chanting "air ball" is that considered heckling?
