Has anyone been there before? I'm headed there next week and was wondering what to expect and what some must-do things were?

The one thing I have heard is that it is amazingly safe. Some people I talked to said it is the safest place they have ever been to and that it's safer than their hometowns. Don't know if that is true or not, but it definitely makes me feel more comfortable.

Been there twice. Once on a cruise (so one day) and then stayed a week all inclusive. Great place and as mentioned above, some cool snorkeling. Your hotel/resort will have a list of all sorts of stuff to do. We rode horses through the jungle (seemed like the jungle, could have been a forest). If you want to scuba, take lessons in the pool at the resort or hotel, cheaper than lessons at the scuba place. Went to a club in town. A lot of Americans were there, the name excapes me but it was a great time. There is a Hard Rock Cafe if you are into that and collect shirts or whatever. I enjoyed it there.
