Sometimes you just like one place the best.

Maybe you've been there before in a lesser position and went somewhere else but ultimately wanted to stay there if the higher position opened up.

Probably the case here.

Kiffin is going to be a monster out at SC with his recruiting skils. He has that swagger and ego that makes people hate him, but it plays well in the living room. Lil Wayne gave him a shout out in a rap song, so you know he has major street cred. That doesn't necessarily transfer to wins, but he is a young guy that guys are going to want to come play, and recruiting SC is hardly like trying to get people to come to North Dakota.

The biggest splash though was bringing back Chow, Monte Kiffin and Ed Orgeron.

Early this morning the SC coaching staff was in shambles as Sarkisian raided it last year and Pete Carroll as well.

In the span of 24 hours they have went from nothing to having 3 of the best assistant coaches at their position on the College or Pro level. It is a stunning turnaround.

Assuming the NCAA doesn't come down too hard on SC, they could be in position to turn it around quick with a good recruiting class or 2 if Lane gets after it on the trail.

This really is wild news. I never even thought of him as a candidate, and in one day he has not only been hired but brought back alot of faces responsible for the program's resurgence in the first half the decade. Not a bad days work.

Any SC fan who is disgruntled with the Lane hiring should focus more on the fact that Mike Reilly or Jack Del Rio wouldn't have brought this kind of staff in with them, and it also keeps continuity in the program as he runs the same style of offense Pete Carroll did. It should no longer be a monumental transformation type thing like someone like Rich Rod tried to do in implementing a new system.

Good post. Very good points.

The only negative I really see with this hire, is the recent reputation of Kiffin when it comes to recruiting violations. He didn't necessarily cause big trouble at Tennessee, but when he was hired, it seemed like he was getting negative publicity about some type of secondary violation every other day. With the current investigation into USC being a huge issue right now, bringing in Kiffin may seem a little risky. Other than that, this should be a good move for USC, in my opinion.

When you think about it, it's more likely than not the safest time to bring in a risky hire like Kiffin. Certainly oversight and compliance will be stepped up greatly albeit out of necessity.

Another interesting thing here is that Lane Kiffin and Norm Chow aren't really cut from the same mold, and reportedly didn't have the greatest relationship during their 4 years at USC. It was Kiffin who took over for Chow when he left for the Tennessee Titans.

It struck me odd when I saw that USC had hired Chow. It looks like some egos may have been put aside as they look at continue their dominance in LA.

Just think of the recruits USC already has, and now they can pull from the big time Tenn recruits they already had. I know 2 players who were suppose to start school tomorrow for UT are backing out. If this happened a day later, these kids would of been enrolled already.

That's a good point. The fact that USC will be making a concerted effort to closely monitor their athletic program at this time is certainly a good thing. To me, it seems like compounding possible recruiting violations by hiring a coach who seems to be a violations nightmare could be troublesome. But you're right. If Kiffin is the guy they want, there's no better time to bring him in than right now, when the program is most likely stepping up awareness when it comes to obeying the letter of the law.

He was actually comparing UT to USC and how USC is a little more appealing.

But yeah...you're a tool.

Well actually it was more like "fervid Tennessee fans" vs. "sexy Southern California fans," and "Tennessee mountains" vs. "Los Angeles beaches and skyline." I'd rather live in Los Angeles than Knoxville. Obviously, Lane Kiffin would too.

If you'd like to draw conclusions, that's okay. But have cognizance, see any pictures of trailer park trash? No, just beautiful mountains. I'm an Eagle Scout, I love the outdoors; but I sure as hell would rather live in Malibu.

Al Davis isn't going to like it that Kiffin is back in California.
