Anyone following along with this? He was taken prisoner in North Korea back in December 2015 after trying to remove a propaganda poster in an employee-only section of the airport. After a "trial" he was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. Fast forward to this week where he's abruptly released on humanitarian grounds and shipped back to Cincinnati where he was found to be in a coma. I remember reading this earlier in the week and thinking he was going to be brain dead as shit, which sounds like is the case unfortunately. North Korea blames it on a combo of botulism/sleeping meds, which both I think have been disproven by UC hospital doctors so far.

Can't imagine why anyone would want to travel to there, let alone fuck around with government property there.

This is a horrible story. He should never have gone there. But he was a kid who was probably very curious. Sometimes people that age don't think through the consequences. Regardless of the reasons, he certainly didn't deserve this fate. Unfortunately there is nothing surprising about crazy-ass N Korea.

It is utterly amazing that millions of people would live this way. They must not have any idea what freedom is like, if they did they would overthrow the government.

...young people from the USA tend to forget that when you're not in this country, really bad things can happen to you abroad. How many times do you hear about young people trying to smuggle drugs and wind up with a life sentence....just dumb but it's that country's rules. Here in our country, it would be considered free speech....there PRISON if you're lucky!

Still wondering why he went to North Korea. You're an idiot to travel there. Def didn't deserve what happened to him obviously.

If you're dumb enough to go to North Korea, I have zero empathy for what happens to you there.

Seems like doctors saw no signs of physical abuse...makes you wonder what the hell they did to cause a coma. Something to do with oxygen deprivation probably.

How does a body heal if in a coma? Like, if he was tortured in a way to cause it, would his injuries heal themselves over time?

Cause reports saying the coma came shorty after his arrest versus recently. That's about year difference. Could NK be lying about the timing and they were waiting to release him until his injuries had healed?

Your body would heal itself, but I think bones and muscles not so much without activity to return to normal. Plus, with only about a year I think doctors can tell if there were severe physical trauma - they still see the signs/scarring on healed muscle tissue and bones on an MRI.

Those were some terrible consequences for a bad decision. I feel for his parents.

They were happy to see their son again and have him home....but seems like maybe they are in a little bit of denial about his condition.

I am kind of wondering about this. Once they realized he wasn't coming back they were like "whoops. okay you can have him back now. he was food poisoned btw"

Just saw that about 2 minutes ago. Sad case.

Question: What should happen concerning this case now?

what should happen and what will not happen is the bigger question. I will say, nothing will happen and nothing going to happen. Little diplomatic talk, half ass bunch of groups will spout off and politician will speak with concern then enjoy a Korea salad for lunch. The UN will sit with their thumbs up their ass. N. Korea will say we killed him and say nothing after that.
I would take any N. Korea criminals we have about 25 and body bomb the N Korea capital around 5:00 , return to sender ....splat, splat, splat

Hate to say it, but while this is a horrible tragedy, if you look around the world I don't think the UN will lose any sleep over one guy who should have known better than to go to NK and commit petty theft.
