My oldest daughter, daughter, my granddaughter wants to go to college BGSU Education Program
She is a 4.0 plus student, played sports but tore her ACL last year, her sport career is over.
She has applied and was excepted into BGSU Education Program.
With hope high that she would be given a good academic scholarship to help off set the cost.
She recieved only a $6000.00 academic grant money.... that would mean she will have to take out school loans of almost $15,000 per year or at the end of 4 years $60000.00

My daughter was in tears and shocked, my granddaughter was disappointed that her hardwork, dedication to learning was not rewarded more. Both understood that there would be some
additional cost and loans but this was not what they where expecting. After having conversation with them both they indicated that $10,000 was what they where hoping for.

Have any of you as parents or students experenced this ...type of let down?

HS GPA doesn't mean what it used to because schools have become watered down due to NCLB. What was her ACT/SAT score?

Use FAFSA and you might be surprised how much you can get at a private school.

I was a 4.0 HS student but my 31 on the ACT got I think 12k/yr off at Marietta College but i had to have a 3.25 GPA in college to keep it. the scholarships there were all based off of ACT scores i think. I think if you had a 33 or higher you got 20/yr, but you had to maintain a 3.75 GPA in college.

Agree on the FAFSA. That is a must.
There are also federal programs like the Pell Grant and federal Stanford loans that are much better than private loans. That is how I got out of OSU with little to no debt.
But, be on the look out and do research on all the various types of scholarships out there. Rotary Club, American Legion, VFW, etc. should all have local scholarships.

Had a similar thing happen to my oldest son. Great grades, very good test scores, lots of community service and leadership in HS and in the community.

Applied to dozens of scholarships. Turns out, you had to be brilliant, homeless and a minority of some sort to get most of the scholarships listed on the FAFSA website, as well as others that he researched. Was truly a waste of time to apply.

He did get alot of money to attend a private school, but they were too limited in majors and the scholarship dollars brought the cost of a private down to the same level as a public like Ohio State, Miami, etc. He chose Ohio State and loved it!

It hasn't even been that long since I did the whole applying to college thing, but I already forget how most of it went, lol. I know I didn't get as much money has I had hoped. Toledo gave me a small amount, I got an American Legion scholarship and some money from the Pell Grant, but I still had to take out loans.

Looks like she got between a 24 and 29 on the ACT to achieve $6k a year based on this calculation.

The max offer is $8k a year.

Belly, did you do any research? Did she apply to any other scholarships?

First Time ACT 27 only took it once

Okay so given those inputs, why are you disappointed in the scholarship offer? Are you or your daughter not capable of researching the financial aid offered by the school?

No I had nothing to do with this. There are something my girls know I dont deal with.... they dont want me dealing with anything like this I wouldpiss to many people off.

To be honest, I find the irony quite hilarious of Belly complaining about the cost of college attendance when he spent the whole campaign season crying about Bernie Sanders plan for free state college.

Sorry your poor family is unable to afford college. Maybe consider voting differently?

I find this ironic too since you trashed Bernie sanders and zwick's support for free education.

That's a decent offer, nothing to be disappointed about.

Don't want to take out that much in loans? Go the community college route first.

I can relate. My daughter was valedictorian of her class (one of many, but that is a different subject) and I think she got a 30 on her act. OSU offered her I think $10k in scholarships. I thought they would have a better offer. (I do know she needed a better act score, but she world's her tail off.) She ended up going to Findlay and they gave her $20k in scholarships but the price difference made the cost the same.

To me, the whole point of a state school is to make college affordable. I don't want someone else to pay for my kid to go to school. I don't want to pay for someone else to go to school. I want the school that is run by the state to be affordable. I realize I'm paying for the state school, but the way to control costs is by charging less. Not by taking from everyone else to pay for higher prices. That just encourages the schools to raise prices.

You couldn't really pay me enough to go to BGSU for school...

That said, I don't know anything about their education program. I would venture to say there's many more options for a better education program to go into. Research that side. I work at a school that has 100% placement for teachers BEFORE graduation -- at least has for the last 3 years in which I've been here. Meanwhile, people still choose other schools nearby with much worse programs. My wife graduated from a school in Kentucky that was tops in the state for education. Both of these are private schools.

Make college cheaper. Do some CLEP exams. Take some summer courses. Shop around. There's no reason for a non-athlete in an education program to pay much for school. Heck, she could probably go part-time and get quality work experiences to be much farther ahead than the rest of the students that choose to go traditional undergrad. The ability to do online courses, night school, weekends, etc. while also working in an educational setting offers up so many better opportunities than traditional undergrad.
