It says that it took six years to complete construction on the building. It probably took just as long to make the fireworks.

I wonder what half is residential and which is the offices. Could you imagine living near the top? You could run a skydiving business out of your condo. I believe the temp change, one pic I saw while they were building it around 2/3's of the building clouds were forming and you couldn't even see the top.

Anyone else see the story on the BBC about porn videos being uploaded to youtube by masking them as children videos? Haha reminds me of our attacks on JJHuddle.

funny thing is that the city is pretty much fucked and not many people will be able to rent a space in the building

Don't let the glitz and glamour of the Dubai blind you they are not well off, the emirate is in a lot debt and they just recently had to borrow $10 billion from its much richer and less extravagant neighbor Abu Dubai.

How many terrorist attacks have happened in UAE? Just curious, I couldn't find it in a quick Google search.

I don't think the UAE has many enemies, but I'm not certain on that. I guess everyone has enemies of some sort.

I just don't get it. Do they expect the middle east to become a vacation destination? It's the last place I'd want to go. Not because of the terrorists, but because of the climate. It's scorching hot their.

And no, they don't have any money. And I think they are running out of oil, so no one will be there in time.

I don't think they had enough fireworks for a building opening.

Are you serious? Dubai located within the United Arab emirates is a popular travel destination

It is amazing the architecture they are building there.

Yeah, Dubai has been a pretty big draw (especially for wealthy Europeans) over the past several years. They've been hammered w/ the global economic situation, though.

Dubai is a pretty well off city (for now at least). I saw this building when we pulled in there last August, and it is pretty impressive. Dubai has some amazing architecture/engineering with this building, the man-made island, and the hotel shaped like a sail boat.

As for the safety, I personally felt safer in Dubai than I did in Thailand.

I have been thinking the same thing. Isn't this going to be a huge target for those bastards that like to hijack planes.
