Why is Western Michigan ranked above Navy?

Western Mich has no wins against a top #25 team and Their opponents this year are 46-62.

Navy has a win over #24 Houston while Navy's opponents this year have a combined record of 53-48.

The reason this matters is $$$$$.

The highest ranked group of 5 team that wins their conference will play in a New Year's Day bowl.

Probably because they have zero losses. I see your point, but being undefeated does count for something.

Seems like the Top 4 are probably locked in if Washington and Clemson win out. If one of them loses, then things could get interesting. The thing is, Michigan has beaten all three of the teams directly behind them. I'm not sure there could be any way to justify having another two loss team jump Michigan when they beat them head-to-head.

I don't believe that's true. The CFP ranking system protocol is published and public interviews with members of the committee have been clear in that they look at the body of work regarding their wins.

I do believe, however, with a conference champ win this week and then a win against Army the body of work will be clear over Western Michigan who will be idle a week from Sat. Even if, which I expect, WMU wins this saturday, they body of work will be better.

The committee wants to encourage quality out of conference schedules not throttle them.

Sounds like Tom Herman is taking 6 of his assistants to Texas with him.

i know this is looking far ahead...but how fucking crazy would it be with OSU and UM both got in final 4, won their semis and then played for the national championship?

If Washington thrashes Colorado and Clemson struggles with VT...can Washington pass them? I don't think they should but think it could happen. Clemson winning at FSU and at Auburn give them way better road wins

Nebraska loses to Iowa and drops 10+ spots and Tennessee loses to Vanderbilt and remains in top 25 only dropping 5

Florida loses and stays the same. Louisville only drops 2 spots after looking like dog shit....and are one spot behind FSU with same 9-3 record but beat FSU by a million. Auburn only drops 1 spot and my favorite....Utah loses and jumps two spots.

I kind of hope Washington loses and Michigan gets in and plays bama. I truly think Michigan can beat bama. An Ohio st and Michigan national championship would be outright insane

I had the same thought earlier that Michigan would probably be the scariest #4 team for Alabama. Washington is really good, but Michigan impressed the hell out of me Saturday. Would rather not risk seeing them again.

Navy has 2 losses. WMU has 0. That is the reason WMU is ahead of Navy. You can read whatever you want into what the committee's protocols are. Thy are ranked where they are because WMU is undefeated and Navy has 2 losses. Navy's body of work will never be better than an UNDEFEATED WMU.

Also, no one cares about Navy. Or WMU for that matter.

Yes they are undefeated but there's a reason why they aren't number 2 in the rankings behind Alabama and there's a reason why there are teams ahead of them with losses.

It's hard to go undefeated. Western should get credit fro that. The committee values strength of schedule and quality wins because they are looking for a team that has proven itself at a high level.

They have said they want a team that has shown it can compete against top competition. As great of a story as Western Mich is, they haven't done that.

Navy, on the other hand, won a division with Memphis, Houston, and Tulsa. If the Mids beat Temple, that's yet another 9-win team they've beaten.

The American Conference is on a completely different plane than the MAC. That's just reality. If you want a compelling Cotton Bowl, then you have to pick Navy. Also, remember: the committee isn't ranking WMU and Navy against each other. They're all being ranked as part of the bigger picture.

There's no way Western should be where they are at considering who they have beaten.

To summarize, you think the committee does not have them ranked appropriately. Moving on...

Understanding what's important and the manner that the committee makes decisions effects every team of interest...even the top 4. It's not just that I think the committee has them ranked *inappropriately. There's more, a lot more. This appears to be the thread the rankings are discussed in.

I do believe over the next two games that Navy will pass Western if they win both, however.

The committee is preparing for Navy to do exactly that based om this information....all Western can do is sit and watch.

No way does WMU belong below Navy. They went 12-0 including wins over Northwestern and Illinois, and completely destroyed the MAC. Not sure if you watched the UT-WMU game but I was beyond impressed by the way they blew the Rockets out. Navy while good has not matched the level of dominance from Western

WMU has exactly 2 wins against FBS schools with winning records. 2

The committee says it values strength of schedule and quality wins because they are looking for a team that has proven itself at a high level. I don't see this in Western's body of work. Two wins against high level opponents doesn't merit the ranking they have.
