Headed to Eldora Speedway to meet up with some cousins, staying at Lake Loramie for the weekend. Looking for ideas for good places to eat in the Shelby/Auglaize/Mercer/Darke county area. We've heard there's a place in Versailles that is supposed to be decent? Anywhere else?

Upscale place in Versailles is Michael Anthony's The Inn at Versailles. Expensive, but good. Bar sort of place there is Sideliners and Creekside.

Auglaize county in Minster there is a place that has my favorite wings and wins the local wing competition often that is called The Dutch Mill. Very small place. Thing is..the few times I went there to try their wings they were not nearly as good as they are at the competition so that may deter going there.

Darke county has Maidrites that isn't bad. People rave but I think they are overrated

Mercer County has a good wing place in Coldwater (about 15 mins from speedways) called McSobers and typically have bands on the weekend evenings. Same town has a placed called Southside Inn...good pulled pork, smoked ribs and such and big frosty fishbowls of beer. Good place to eat as well.

My personal favorite is a place in Celina (20 mins away) called C-Town Wings. They use a wood fire grill and their burgers are massive and steaks are fantastic. If you get wings or boneless the sweet heat sauce is fantastic.

Just up the road in st henry...10 mins maybe, 3G's is a good place..little more expensive that a regular restaurant and in that town Fish Mo's bar and St Henry Nite Club if you want bar food.

Don't believe so, but within a couple of miles there is Jean and Joes Town Tavern that has good food and also the Korner. If I had to choose between those two I would go with Town Tavern for eats.

When you go through Maria Stein just think to yourself......this is the town that has had the most successful HS football program in the state in the last 15 years!

They Keyhole is a bar just south of Ft. Loramie; just before the 66/47 intersection; has decent wings and pizza. There's another place just across the street from there that has amazing wings and good pizza. It's a restaurant/ carryout. If I can remember the name, I'll post it.

Yeah..its not bad. They advertise they have the warmest beer and coldest pizza around. Its pretty good, think they only have pizza and subs and wings.
Think the place across the street is called Skudzees. Not sure if that is spelled right or if has changed over the years. Never had food there..just a few drinks.

Moeller Brew Barn only has cheese plates or other minor appetizers, but they'll order you a pizza from the Korner Kafe or Town Tavern and you can eat it in the taproom. And thavoice (which autocorrects to 'the lice', which is fitting) is per usual 100% wrong. Gotta go with the Korner's food if you have a choice.

so is everyone else who is going.. except they're leaving the house together and taking their children with them.

Minster has The Wooden Shoe which specializes in chicken and most people either love it or hate it. The bar across the street (Can't think of the name for some reason) has good pizza.

Went back to their web site last night, and found a number of places listed that carry their brews.

Buds PIzza is across from the wooden shoe and yeah, their pizza if fantastic.

Count me in on the hate it crowd for The Wooden Shoe. I expected way, way, way better when we went a couple of times!


and kayo......Of course it it just preference about Korner and the Town Tavern. Loved the Korner years ago whenever Pacman would dj. I just prefer the food at TT a bit more but it isn't like I have been to both places a dozen times.


Ft Recovery has a couple of places. The Woods improved greatly from my first to my 4th trip there. Thienmans (Tinmans) has some pretty decent steaks for a bar.

Keyhole pizza is for real. PLace is a dump but food is great.

Go to Buffalo Jacks in Covington. Wild game food is good but you cant beat their all you eat Walleye and morrell mushrooms.

THey have a killer buffalo philly sandwich.

Did the Wooden Shoe on arrival night. Wife had the fish, I had the famous fried chicken. Everything was cooked well, nearly everything was way light on seasoning. Not terrible, just kind of bland.

Was in Greenville one day and Sidney another, so we had to have the local favorites (Maid Rite in G-ville, the Spot in Sidney). Win by TKO for Sidney.

The Inn at Versailles was outstanding. A $60 meal that would have been $90 in a bigger city and would be worth every dime.

Ended up at Morrie's Landing across from the State Park a couple of times, being in walking distance. Solid, very inexpensive diner food (better fried chicken than the "Shoe").

Oh yeah, forgot about The Spot. My wife loves that place. PRetty nice. Assuming you saw the pics of when Pres Bush was there? If I woulda thought of Sidney I would have suggested The Bridge. On the high end like the Inn at Versailles, but I rate it a bit better than the Inn. Maidrites...local fav but I have never been impressed by it. Glad the weather held out for the races.

I have the same feelings about Maid-Rite. The family likes the way I cook them better. voice, you should head down to Arcanum sometime and try the Old Arcana. It's a little more high end spot, but it's amazing. Voted best French Toast in the state haha

Will make it a point to try it out. Did you mean it is like The SPot but more high end (since it has French toast?) or like a place for a great dinner/steak/etc?

They're stuff is freshly made, so it's a little more expensive because of quality. When I say high end, I'm talking ingredients. For example, the french toast is bourbon praline french toast(w/e the hell that means). They're burgers are pretty good too; made with beef brisket. Here's there website if you wanna check it out. IIf you want a good home made burger, drives down to Troy, just east of the square is K's hamburger shop. Been there for about 80 years.
