I even agree with this. The United States is a Constitutional Republic with democratic nuances. That "Constitutional" part contains, in the First Amendment, a freedom of religion that Jefferson explained as requiring a chasm between the state's reach and the church's reach.
If the two just left each other the hell alone, things would be far smoother. Fewer people would get pissed at religious institutions, and there would be less fear of government "taking our religious rights" or "being overrun by Sharia Law."
