Because an 8-team playoff would mean 6 bowl games, and if you keep the same New Year's 6 format, it wouldn't work. If you rotated the games and played the quarterfinals the week before New Year's, that means there would be Rose Bowl's played not on New Year's Day. I suppose it would work, but I'm guessing the bowl games would rather still get to have their normal events separate from the playoff.Al Bundy;1774789 wrote:If the semifinals were kept as part of new year's day bowls, why couldn't quarterfinal losers still go to bowl games? For example, the Iowa/MSU game was basically a quarterfinal game this year, and the loser went to a bowl game.
Plus, using the quarterfinals and the other four New Year's 6 bowls, would reduce the bowl eligible teams and bowls available. If anything, the sport is going the other way.
