Heard the deal would be Carrasco & Santana to the Reds for Frazier. Urshela would move to 1st base.

Yes, I personally like that more than the Frazier deal

Makes little sense to move a slick fielding/light hitting 3B to 1B. Just read tweets that deal between Reds and Tribe is unlikely. As has been mentioned, Tribe seems unlikely to deal starters, and we don't have many high end arms in the minors right now.

How is it the rest of the league is seemingly swimming in money (regardless of market size) and we are shopping at the Dollar Store still with an occasional trip to Big Lots if we're good?

It makes no sense to me.

What small markets are dropping big cash in free agency? The DBacks? They seem to do this every few years, suck then sell everyone.

There is no way that is true. Just, no way. If the Tribe even entertained the thought of both of them for Frazier...who is probably past his prime, they are retarded.

Why is Phoenix considered small market? 4 pro sports teams and the 7th highest metro population in the country.

My question is directed at everyone, not just you. I hear AZ sports teams get referred to as "small market" all the time.

They're not small market, but they were the only non coastal mega market I could think of that is spending cash in free agency

Thanks. It wasn't directed at you I was asking everyone, because PHX is generally referred to as a small market in the sports world.

Apparently they're 14th in metro, not 7th, so it's not that big, but they're 6th in pure city population.

Their TV deal is probably pretty big. They probably draw from NM, Utah and Nevada.

That's why they're spending money, I believe they have a new deal that kicked in this year.

But my question is: "why are Phoenix sports referred to as 'small market' when discussed nationally?"

I never really thought about it until I heard someone on a podcast, I forget which one, discussing small markets and basketball and referred to the Suns as a small market.

Sounds like they have spoken to 20+ teams regarding 25 players but nothing done yet.
You can pretty much say this about every tribe off season. Dolan is too much of a cheap fuck to try and get this team over the hump. All these rumors are just rumors and nothing will come out of it. We just better hope the pitchers gel at the right time.

I agree. They will probably coax David Dellucci to come back.

If they are going to get anything of value, it's going to be the trade route.

Multiple reasons, but the ownership of the Suns and Cardinals have probably gone a long way in giving Phoenix sports that reputation. Bidwell was an AWFUL owner that didn't pay his players until they moved into U of Phoenix Stadium, and Sarver was one of the NBA owners that was complaining the loudest about losing money before the last NBA work stoppage. In addition to that, east coasters don't typically travel to the desert unless it's to Vegas, so people aren't aware. Also, Phoenix is a transient city, no one is from there, so there is much smaller "die-hard" fanbase, sort of like Atlanta.

Past his prime? He will be entering his 5th full season and 30 years old when the season starts.

Not this year, but in the years to come (have no idea of his contract situation, but Carrasco is under team control for like 5 more years). While on the flip side, you have 2 pitchers entering their best years. Frazier is on the wrong side of 30 to make a deal for 1 of them, let alone both, IMO. He isn't some HOF, so unless I'm getting him at 25, with his current numbers, I'll pass.

That deal would have made even less sense for the reds who are committed to getting younger. I'd say whoever came up with those names was way off

Lol, I read that again to see what you meant. I initially read it Carrasco and Salazar, not Santana. Changes things a bit. Swap the same Salazar for Carrasco and I'd listen, but still would want more.

Salazar would be the most likely to be dealt... Maybe Bauer. As Laley stated, Carrascp has a long term team friendly contract... Teams are going to have to offer a lot for that.

Heard an interview with Francona this morning talking about the winter meetings. In a nutshell, he basically said no need to freak out if something doesn't get done at the meetings because it's often where the groundwork is laid out for future deals. What he also said, which I thought was interesting, was "we also realize that we are nowhere near ready (roster-wise) for Spring Training." Your move front office.

I'm sure Francona is getting tired of this shit. There is only so much magic he can work.

Oh, I agree but he seems like the type who won't speak up about it. At times last year when you'd think he would explode & lose it, he just kept an even keel with a "stay the course" type of mentality. Like you guys were saying about Joe Thomas on the Browns thread, I don't get the impression that Francona is extremely vocal/excitable.

I am not quite sure about that. Look at his falling out with the Red Sox lol.

Well, in his postgame interviews, even when they booted the ball all over the field (defensively), he sounded like he was on Prozac. Possible he's more vocal behind the scenes.
