Great payroll breakdown.

The Dolans are looking at an $85 million dollar payroll, with $17 of it committed to Swisher. Bourne and Johnson who aren't on the squad anymore.

Trotting out a $68 million dollar team in 2016 with the amount of money the game is swimming in right now is downright scandalous.

That Sporting News article about the Dolans needing to spend like a professional franchise for once was dead on.

I'd sure like them to spend more, but quite frankly, attendance has been shit. I don't know how that all translates into money needed for free agent acquisition, but despite the fact that the team was a wild card in 2013, contended down to the last week in 2014, and at least hung around in 2015, sub 10K attendance for games is pathetic.

That has 0 impact on what payroll should be.

How much does the team get in league money? Drawing a million extra fans means about $10-20 million/year. So I would think attendance does enter into it, if only it is a fraction of the team's operating revenue.

It should be the other way around. If the organization provides a product worth watching, then customers will pay. Until then, I won't go to a game that I pay for.

In 2015, the cutoff figure was $189M. Four teams exceeded that, and were taxed (Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox and Giants). The Dodgers paid $43.7M, the Yankees $26M, the Red Sox $1.87M and the Giants $1.33M. Total is approximately 73M, split on a prorated basis (based on how close/far you are from the $189M mark).

I don't know the exact number (couldn't find it), but with the information above, it's not likely more than maybe 5M the Indians would get from the league on the luxury tax.

When the Tribe went to STO, which Dolan owned, they were making the 3rd most on TV revenue in MLB. Behind the Yankees with YES Network and someone else. Don't know what it is now, but they still make a shit ton from STO. None of it has translated to spending on the team.

In the 90's, the team spent money in free agency (R. Alomar, Loften(when they got him back after trading him), Murray, Martinez, Hershiser, etc.), and they received enormous fan support. In reality, the 2013-2015 teams were average teams that weren't the most exciting to watch. I know they made the playoffs in 2013, but it has become a very watered down system, and that team never beat the good teams all season. They also could do more to attract your middle class fan. Decent tickets are going to cost you at least $50 a piece if you buy them directly. If you took a family of four to the game, you are easily looking at $300 for tickets, parking, concession, gas, etc. Why spend that amount for a product that hasn't been good in years?

Tribe remodeled the stadium... District tickets are like $ 13 and include a drink. Money is hardly an object.... Especially compared to Browns tix. They are not even competitive let alone "good".

I'm not sure which district you are referring to, but you are not going to get a decent seat from them for $13. It's also laughable to try to compare the NFL and MLB. It would be like comparing prime rib to a Big Mac.

So true. On weekend days or Thursday's in the summer there were times we'd get a couple upper deck seats in the first few rows for a Tigers game behind home plate for $20. Baseball is far and away the cheapest sport to attend, and well worth it now that the division doesn't suck

This is one of the quietest offseasons for the Tribe, even by Tribe standards, in recent memory. Raji Davis and Mike Napoli added. Avoided arbitration with others but they haven't even been in the discussion for much of anything else.

The Tigers opening day payroll with be nearly 100M more than Cleveland.

Signed Tomlin to an extension today. Not sure what to expect out of this year.

Tribe putting Thome and Belle in the club Hall of Fame, along with Frank Robinson and Charlie Jamieson (stud from the 20's...I guess. Some on here may have seen him play and would be able to comment).

Ceremony will be prior to the game on July 30th.

I went to the ceremony game in 2014 when Omar went it...they are really well done and very cool. I'd like to try to make it for this one. Those teams from the 90's really hold a special place to me from my childhood. I don't know if I would be the baseball fan I am now without them. I am pretty sure if I was growing up now the current team would not be making me fall in love with baseball...despite the fact they do play real hard. I'd probably just be a casual fan.

I still remember my parents trying to console me in 1997 after game 7. I was in tears after the game...like the family dog had just died. I was 10 and didn't know any better. My mom, "Honey...it's ok. They are really good. They'll be soon." Oh yea, mom? It only took a full decade. LoL.

Now that football is over, the wait for baseball begins...
