And here's the specific question/response regarding Haden not "wanting" to go. Pettine could've worded that differently like "Joe decided he COULDN'T go" but instead....(you also had to hear Pettine's tone)

On who decided whether or not Haden could play:
“We left it up to Joe. We left it up to Joe, and he made the decision that he didn’t want to go.”

I can't speak for Joe Thomas but he's been an ironman for the Browns, having never missed a game. When Haden sat himself out for such a minor thing, I'm sure JT might have been a little pissed.

Pettine had a ton of support last year but I think he's wearing thin with a lot of the fan base. I fucking HATE these defensive "guru" coaches that are brought in and then their defense sucks.

Same with offense. Shurmur was supposed to be some offensive savant and his offense was like watching paint dry.

If O'Neil (DC) sucks ass that bad, Pettine needs to take over and start calling the defense. All we heard about was this "elite" defense and I can't remember a Browns defense being THIS bad THIS early.

He didn't throw him under the bus, he said the truth...Haden decided on his own that he wasn't going to play because of a FINGER. Pretty lame, imo.

Defineely lame, but does Haden even make a difference in that game? The football "gods" were practically daring the Browns to win this game. SD had 3/5 of their line out, their top 2 WRs go out, and they missed the GW FG. Instead, the Browns continuously would send the entire house on third down, which as a result their blitz was picked up and an easy dump off pass for 60 yards was completed. Literally the only way the chargers could have moved the ball and they did it.

Go Cavs.

Jim O'Neil would have a hard time coaching CB West right now, much less the Browns defense.

Pettine's only shot at saving his job is to can him and take over the defense and show some improvement.

That he would rather be fired than can his boy (who is clearly in over his head) is dumbfounding.

I get being loyal, but it is not like the criticism of O'Neil is unfounded. He has been horrendous since he got here, and even with all the new toys on defense he got it has gotten worse.

This situation is starting to resemble the Romeo / Maurice Carthon alliance where finally Savage had to step in and get rid of him because Romeo refused no matter how inept he was as a playcaller.

Pettine is chewing up any goodwill/credibility he had in that locker room awful fast. The defenders themselves were all but coming out and saying the Chargers knew our plays ahead of time, and with a veteran group on that side of the ball their patience for Jim O'Neil's incompetence is non-existant at this point.

By being tone deaf, stubborn and clueless Pettine is going to find himself unemployed because he prioritized keeping his butt boy around over giving the team a real chance to win.

Considering that Pierre Desir, who got burnt repeatedly by Keenan Allen, started in Haden's place, I'd like to think Haden would've made a difference. By the time the game ended, the Chargers were down to one WR, a bunch of TE's and little Danny Woodhead as their receiving options. I like their chances against the pass a bit more with Haden than Desir.

And on a side note, the NFL is now investigating the Browns due to Haden being "probable" on Friday and then inactive on game day.

Former Browns head coach Sam Rutigliano is always bringing up the fact that the Browns made a "mistake" in letting Jordan Cameron walk in FA. I chuckled when I saw:

Cameron 12 catches for 170 yards
Barnidge 16 catches for 235 yards 2 TD's

Obviously Barnidge isn't as athletic but he's probably more durable/reliable.

Nevermind that the Patriots are always up on teams and thus play more in nickel and dime since they have to defend the pass. Which equates to a worse run defense. It's like the Browns #1 pass defense a few seasons ago. Worst run defense, thus teams ran all over us and no need to pass. It's all related.

To counterpoint:

Of all the coaches in the NFL, BB has probably been at the forefront of embracing the "who needs a feature back?" mentality that has swept over the NFL recently. He picks up a couple scrap pieces and relies on Brady's skill being distracting enough to defenses that virtually anyone can give them 4+ yards a carry. Their offense is solely based around Brady. That made things funny when Foot started patting himself on the back about Dion Lewis because he started for the Pats while Blount was suspended. Just another case of something that's factually accurate on one level, but clueless on another. The reason he is in NE is because he's cheap. The reason he can contribute is because defenses are so concerned with Brady that they can't focus on the running game.

Things have been like that in NE forever. I remember a game early in Brady's career against the Steelers when they hardly called any runs the entire game. LeBeau's zone blitz scheme was all the rage then, so NE had an offensive game plan designed almost completely around short, quick-hitting passes (lots of bubble screens). The defense was on its heels the entire game while he completed one 5-10 yard pass after another. Most teams/QBs can't do that. NE can and exploits that their QB is simply better than virtually anyone else.
