If I'm going to bet my wife and kids on a car in the ice and snow, then I'm putting them in a Subaru...hands down, without question, period. And I'm speaking from experience.

The traction assist in my Honda pulls me thru slippery conditions and keeps me straight. I'm pretty comfortable in that thru most conditions, but if I'm going out in really bad weather, I'll take the Subaru. It is much more solid in the worst of conditions.
I don't think you have a wife and children yet, because if you do, and you can afford it, you want them travelling in the safest car possible....you start looking at these things, safety ratings and the like. Subarus are reasonably priced, last forever, and have great resale value. It's a no-brainer for me. I don't care about image when it comes to my family's safety.

My mom is a terrible driver, but she had several Subarus and never any trouble in the snow. I definitely agree that some people with awd are freaking morons in the snow. Awd doesn't make snow disappear. But I have a 4wd truck that occasionally gets stuck in the snow. I think people see 4x4 trucks and big SUVs and think they're invincible. I see those all the time off the road stuck. Entirely depends on the conditions. Occasionally we get enough snow or pure ice where AWD has its benefits. For the most part I do agree many fwd cars with good tires will get you through. I've also had a few occasions where the rear end got loose in a FWD car.Raw Dawgin' it;1703689 wrote:

I also agree many times you see SUV's/4x4 pick ups in the ditch because of their overconfidence.
