Hernia?

Doctor thinks I may have a hernia/sports hernia. I start physical therapy for it next week and just wanted to see if anyone had experience PT/surgery for this issue. Feel free to PM if you don't want to discuss in public.

I had legit hernia at age 13. It required surgery wasn't bad enough where I needed the mesh thing or whatever.


I then had a minor sports hernia about 5 years ago. It healed on it's own. I did minimal PT, some core stabilizing stuff. It was fine in a few months. I was scared as hell when it first happened though. It was a weird burning sensation in the crotchal region...had some terrifying thoughts thinking about what could have caused it. :laugh:

How long did it take to heal? It's pretty damn painful.

I'm pretty sure it happened from either weight lifting or basketball. Not really sure I can pinpoint a genesis.

Thanks. Me too! I've been dealing with this for about 9 months and its only getting worse. The doctor thinks the physical therapy for about 6 weeks will eliminate the problem. He says surgery is an option but doesn't think I'll have to go that route.

Mine was just a very small tear, causing like a dull pain off and on. It lasted around 3-4 months after I finally got diagnosed. It was not a fun time though, it took several trips to the doc just to figure out wtf the was causing the pain. It drove me fucking crazy.

Yeah, people DO actually lift weights. Could've also gotten it from lifting a baby. Could've gotten it from anything, except maybe distance running since nobody considers that stupid shit a "sport."

That's pretty much my experience except now the pain is present all day all the time. It's not bad 80% of the time but if I try to exert much force on it it gets even more painful. My original doctor thought it was a gastrointestinal problem but I kept saying I don't think its that. Finally I went to a sports medicine doctor and he didn't even hesitate to say it sounded like a hernia. He did the cough test and said it came back negative but it may be a sports hernia and prescribed PT.

Get the surgery and be done with it. You've got a tear in the muscle and your guts are trying to escape. Therapy will sometimes relax the extension (but it will come back). Sounds like your Doc is a quack.

I saw a doctor about once a week since I started noticing it and they did all sorts of tests(except an MRI). I got frustrated with doctors for a bit after he ruled out anything serious and stopped going. I went to a sports medicine doctor last week because I wanted to rule out a muscle issue and he was pretty sure after reviewing medical records that it was a muscle issue. It's actually gotten worse which worries me.

My new doctor is probably the best doctor I've ever been to. No complaints.

Yeah, definitely don't mess with that shit. If surgery needs done (eventuually), get it done. Don't want it turning into something worse, if that's possible. I have nagging plantar fasciitis from running (imagine that) which I haven't had checked and it just lingers. Best of luck!

Yeah I'm hoping to get everything taken care of by the end of the year. Doctor is confident the PT will solve it enough for it to heal on its own. If after 6 weeks I don't see a significant improvement, he will recommend surgery.

I didn't know a hernia could heal itself.

Had a pretty bad double hernia about 25 years ago. Had the surgery and a vasectomy at the same time.

Had surgery for an double inguinal hernia about five years ago. I was really sore for about two to three days, but was able to walk pain free within a week. I was running again in approximately a month, and this was at the advice of my doctor (I actually felt good enough to resume running in a couple weeks, but he said not to push it and give it ample time to fully heal).

No, other than what I did on my own, which was basically walking. The worst part was getting out of bed those first few mornings--damn did that hurt.
