How many of you are horse owners? I think I may be in the very near future. Suggestions? Do's & don'ts?

This sounds like a terrible decision. You're way too cheap to own a horse.

have fun cleaning up the shit. If you dont have land and are going to rent a stable, chances are you aren't going to get your money's worth. Well, you won't get your money's worth either way.

Horses are a waste of money. They eat, shit, you clean up, and repeat. They are a money pit with no real way to make your money back, unless of course you are buying a race horse. Buy a cow, pig, chickens, or anything else that once the kids lose interest you can have it butchered. I guess you could raise it and eat it although I think its illegal to eat horse in the US. You can move to canada and eat horse though, so good luck with what ever you decide.

That's an expensive 4H project. I'm not a big fan of horse for most of the reasons mcburg posted. Unless you are doing something competitively with them, they are a big money pit. But I'm more of a functional guy, so steers, pigs and chickens are what I like. If you want a "pet" type 4H project, maybe look at a goat instead of horse.

Word. Just tell the wife and daughter no. Living in town and owning a horse is stupid.

I currently have 8 horses and they are a huge waste of money and time. (Emphasis on time. If you don't mind paying, they will still suck up all your time. ) I agree with most everything mcburg said. Do you have any experience with horses? Do you have a truck and trailer or some way to transport them?

I would recommend that you find someone who knows what they are doing and then lease one for a few years. It might seem more expensive but it will save you money in the long run.
