I am going to be studying in England for 6 weeks starting at the end of June. I have two long weekends where I don't have class, so I figured i'd travel around.

My questions:

1) Where should I go from England? Don't say London (i'll be in oxford) because I will do that pretty regularly.
2) Is it best to fly or take the train?

Thanks

I don't know anything about Oxford's airport situation, but look into what they offer regarding budget airlines....Easyjet, RyanAir.

I would definitely hit up London for one of the weekends via train then another city a short flight away for the other.

My suggestions, if I were in your shoes...

Amsterdam
Ibiza
Berlin
Prague
Spain (multiple cities)
Paris

All depends on what you're looking for. You have a ridiculous amount of options

Derpppp, just noticed you said don't say London, but my list still stands. Also, recently I've been looking at Croatia for the hell of it....looks fucking amazing.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into easyjet and ryanair. I think the best option for oxford is to go back to london to leave the country.

And trust me, I will have many of my nights spent boozing in London lol. I just want to consider leaving for the two long weekends. The first noe is the weekend of the WC final, so if a European team is in the Final, i'm going to that country.

I just had a similar convo with my roommate. He's leaving Thursday for London. He's there for 2 weeks and wanted to take a side trip. I believe he decided on Berlin.

You can fly to Ireland/Northern Ireland pretty cheap too ($60) or so I believe. I'd go there.

That sounds fun.

right now I'm thinking Berlin or Ireland or Paris (three suggestions I have gotten). I am not really interested in Amsterdam or Prague.

Not saying Ireland wouldn't be cool (I've never been) but I'm sure it's a bit similar to England. I'd want to change it up.

I'm an underground music and techno fiend. Berlin is the world capital for that, so that would probably be my #1.

What are you looking for? Sites? Party? Food?

Prague has always intrigued me because I've heard it has great sites, food, party scene and relatively cheap.

Sites and Food probably. I'll party enough in London. I just want to go somewhere that I can say is completely different than what I'm used to. That's why I think Berlin might be fun or paris even.

Oooh, i've heard great things about monte carlo. That could be fun. I think good food would probably be #1 for me, though.

Paris is a cheap Chunnel ticket away. From London to Paris is under 3 hours if I remember correctly, and the train is much cheaper than an airline.

If you have the time to travel like that, definitely go see multiple cities in Italy.

I have been to Milan, Genoa, and some small towns like Novi Ligure, Allesandria, etc.

The pizza and pasta in Italy is insanely good, you won't eat pasta in the US for many months after being there.

I want to see Florence and Rome, but that will have to be another trip.

There is some amazing food in Brussels Belgium as well.

I'd like to visit Muirfield, Turnberry, or Royal Birkdale (I hear St. A is impossible).

Thanks guys. This is making it really hard for me.

I think i'm going to go with the WC option first.

If not, I'm going to consider:

Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Paris, Berlin, and Milan as potential options to visit.

If Italy... Florence and Cinque Terre are awesome. Would skip Milan regardless. Rome was cool but loved Florence.

Also, big fan of Edinburgh and Isle of Skye in Scotland

Absolutely no reason to go to Milan. Florence and Venice are great, and Rome is fun for a couple of days, it is the one city that I would advise Americans to go once, but not necessary to go back.

In England the West and Southwest are great, although Brighton is overrated.

If you go to Ireland go to Cork or somewhere in the countryside, not Dublin which is the Detroit of Europe

I don't know what makes the countries similar...you could be right, but there's completely different cultures. They all have awesome things to offer.

Sweden was real nice when I was there. I've had friends go to Switzerland, Italy, and Greece all recently. My in-laws are going on a Mediterranean cruise in September. I am envious of you all! It's been 4 years since I've been abroad. I really want to go again. I was in the planning stages to go to Scotland. I have a friend in Amsterdam, so he told me I've got a place to stay anytime there. I just need to cross the pond again!

Prague is good in the Summer, awful in the Winter. If you are into hiking you can do a northern Italy/Switzerland trip. If you are into history then it is Paris or London. They are the most travelled to cities by far and you can spend weeks and not see everything. Automatik is correct that Berlin is known for its late night party scene, otherwise not much to do and we're too old for that! In Germany I would suggest Munich. No need to go to Athens unless you coupling with a trip to the Greek isles - you can literally see everything interesting in a day in a half.

I didn't realize the OC was so full of globe trotters.

I would love to go to Europe but I have hard time not spending my vacation money on Vegas or all-inclusive in Central America. By nature, I am not a "sight-seer". I do enjoy all types of ethnic cuisine and exploring but your money goes so much farther vacationing in this hemisphere.
