If you have more than a few they can. Although I have 4 acres for 10...they might have enough to scratch that they won't. The other thing they do is take dust baths, and the bare dirt will attract them for that. And they don't give a shit that you have stuff planted.justincredible;1620672 wrote:I wasn't aware. I've read that a lot of people let their chickens free range in their gardens to eat bugs and weeds.

How 'bout this. You pay to replace our fence with something else and I'll change it. Otherwise, like I said before, IDGAF what you think of it. My wife and I both like it and it serves its purpose by keeping the dogs contained to where we want them to be.

Its understandable being defensive, hopefully someday you and your wife's taste improves from being so tacky.

I have chicken wire around my garden to keep rabbits out. It looks like hell but I don't care.

Just to keep animals out of plants, a wire fence around a bed is not nearly as tacky as a few feet of iron fencing across the middle of a small back yard.

Chicken wire is more tacky than iron fencing, no matter the use.salto;1620761 wrote:Just to keep animals out of plants, a wire fence around a bed is not nearly as tacky as a few feet of iron fencing across the middle of a small back yard.

Seems easy doesn't it. But I bet I'll to build in a way I can still easily get into my garden. SO I'LL HAVE TO COME UP WITH SOMETHING.salto;1620738 wrote:

I used chicken wire. It worked great. And unless you are standing pretty close or aren't looking for it, you can't tell it's there.

I was thinking of something like this, that I can easily remove to work in the gardens. Simple PVC and chicken wire.

That's not bad. I might need to do something similar in my front beds if the squirrels don't stop digging. I also want to try something similar with clear plastic instead of chicken wire for extending the growing season.WebFire;1620914 wrote:I was thinking of something like this, that I can easily remove to work in the gardens. You'd have to secure it somehow. My beds are made from barn beams, so I imagine I can use some kind of latch.

I like the idea. It would be pretty easy to put together, too.

As long as whatever you get replaces that ugly as sin iron fence you're making improvements.justincredible;1620920 wrote:That's not bad. I might need to do something similar in my front beds if the squirrels don't stop digging.

pvc & plastic has always worked well for me when doing garden box covers...simple yet effective and if your storage space is limited it's easy to disassemble at the end of the season.

I spent $25 today for a hatchet. Did major work in removing shrubs, bushes, and a nasty vine out of the tree. First cost of beautification I've incurred this year. That vine was terrible, filled up the bed of a truck (piled over the roof) when we hauled it off.
