I overheard in the barber shop last week that Orrville has less than 30 guys out for football.....including frosh. If true,those numbers ate dangerously low.

I hope the boys are not practicing today so we don't have an injury. I hope they are watching films in a padded room and have a blanket in case they get cold.

Yikes! Friday is definitely a strange day to start on. I don't remember ever starting two-a-days on anything but a Monday. However, it is odd that these extra two days would not be taken advantage of. Who knows what the scenario is though. I know many coaches were not expecting a Friday start date, so when they made up schedules, they put Monday as the start date on the schedule. Hard to adjust that if families planned vacations around the schedule and are out of town. However, two-a-days could still begin for those that aren't around. Not an Orrville guy, but it seems like things are getting kind of scary over there...

The start date was not a surprise was it? The OHSAA did not just put the start date out there a week ago. If Coaches did not plan properly that is on them. Get the kids to work if you are not a deep or extremely talented team then you have lots of work to do. GET TO WORK!!!

Soccer, volleyball, cross country were all ready to go...but somehow football has to start on Monday? Really?

And by the way if the numbers are as low as people say then the coaches should be working on about a 1 coach for every 2 players. If a few scheduled vacation for the start of practice they have plenty available.

Looks like some Orrville players may have to start looking for available housing in Wooster if those numbers don't go up...and soon.

Start dates are on the OHSAA site and scheduled YEARS out..think right now they have the next 4 years start day...all august first.

Sorry...that is just a no go in my book. A complete no go.

Years and years ago our starting QB was on vacation the first week of two a days. Not surprising....our team/program was horrible at the time.
It was complete BS and the coach didnt do much other than make him feel stupid by not knowing the new numbering system and inserted him into the starting QB spot by the PM of the first day back.
and it wasnt like he was this all star qb who could just step in.

Yeah, not saying I agree with it. It's not the same anymore though. Kids think they are entitled and don't have to work, and if there are consequences for their actions, it almost always results in parents causing a fuss. That's why coaches are in and out of jobs so often these days. Parents with money or clout in a district call the shots, and if you do something they don't like, you're gone.

I'm not looking forward to the days where this young generation runs our nation.

1th, older people have been saying that pretty much every generation!!!
As for kids taking vacation during football two a days....that goes to the respect the kid/parents have for the coach and program. I remember how it goes, the sport the kid loves..he isnt missing practice for anything. He will go to school sick so he doesnt miss practice. Was like tha when I played, and is still today when I was coach HS kids. The sports the kids love and respect they make it a point to be at practice

I think this is the LARGEST factor.... I also think WE as adults have lower expectations as well.... It has been my experience that kids work to live up to the expectations of the adults and peers they are surrounded by. If we as adults don't expect much we won't get much. In those environments winning isn't very exciting and loosing doesn't sting.

Pads go on today...oh wait we took a few days off at the beginning so they won't put the pads on till Thursday.

No Friday pads go on. Thurs is helmet shoulder pads.

I believe TOMORROW would be helmets and shoulder pads. They do that for two days, and then one day of full gear with no contact, and then first day of contact would be Saturday.

I have not heard an exact number...yet. However, the last number I did catch wind of was the upper 30's to low 40's and that does include frosh.

Numbers are down. However, I did a head count from my senior year team picture in 1994 and we had 43 kids in the photo and that included 4-5 frosh (two were coaches sons).

I can't recall any years when an Orrville team had 50 or more kids on the roster. Back in 80's maybe...but you would have had to dress the freshman to get to that number and I don't believe Mo ever dressed frosh (maybe a select few over the years). I also know that Mac was not one to dress frosh either in his tenure.

With the exception of that Zwick kid of course. That turned out OK.

Zwick may have dressed as a frosh, but if the Yungen kid doesn't tear his ACL in pre-season, Zwick isn't the QB. Funny how things work out.

OldRider's post is correct.....frosh didn't typically dress under Mac and Mo. If they dress under Davault, they typically don't play short of your Hoobler and Monheim exceptions.

This year several frosh will not only play, but probably start. Out of necessity more than anything. Hoping they are able to contribute.

Interesting on numbers from other OCC teams.....from a Mansfield newspaper article:

Conway (Mansfield Madison) expects about 80 players in grades 9 through 12, which he said has been the average for the last three or four season. (OHSAA says they have 384 boys in grades 9-11 in 2013...so around 20% of their enrollment plays football)

Bradley (Mansfield Senior) said he handed out 67 summer workout shorts and tops. “We will get a more kids coming in when we get started,” he said. (OHSAA says Senior has 423 boys in grades 9-11 in 2013....so around 18% of their enrollment plays football using 75 as their football numbers for 2014)

We have 185 boys in 9-11 from the 2013 OHSAA enrollment.....easily the smallest in the OCC. If we use 40 boys out for football (9-12)....that's 22% of our boys that play football. A higher % of boys playing than Senior AND Madison. VERY INTERESTING.

So the # of kids going out for football is in line with at least 2 other OCC schools....it comes down to the size of the school. It's easier to find the right mix of 20-25 kids when you have 75 kids in the program than it is when you only have 40.

Just looking at those numbers again^^^.....what the hell are we doing in the OCC???

I pulled out a couple of my yearbooks for some comparison of the recent numbers. My 8th grade football team had 30 players on it. My senior year of 1988, the varsity football team had 30 players, 12 of them were seniors. No freshmen. That team beat Wadsworth and Wooster, destroyed Copley, and shutout every team in the AOL, and made the playoffs. This year it looks like the 7th and 8th grade teams will each have 20+ players. Figuring that those teams will lose just a few players by the time they hit high school, since pee wee football weeded out the ones that would probably have given up football after 7th and/or 8th grade, the high school numbers for Orrville football are very similar to what they were 25 years ago. What needs to happen is to get out of the OCC and into a league with teams who have similar numbers and Orrville will be fine.
