At least 1 dead, 3 injured

Have friends there. But all are safe thankfully. Hopefully they find the shooter.

I think it's time we allow our men and women in uniform to be armed on their own base. It's ridiculous.

I'm hearing 4 dead including the shooter. Seems like it was a dispute between military members.

I feel sad that the shooter was a soldier suffering from PTSD. It's a difficult situation for some men and women who have seen or live in a combat area and experience the devastation of war.
i believe that for some individual they are just weak and let them self become more of a victim of there self pity

I have a friend with PTSD. The worst part of his was that he went to Iraq and Afghanistan and returned fine. Then Hurricane Katrina took place and he had to go down there and help remove the bodies. When he came back he was changed. He's now a functional alcoholic whos had 3 DUI's but continues to drive drunk. We have tried to talk to him about his problem but he doesn't think there is a problem and his mom and dad also Ingore and help his addiction. After his third DUI he never renewed his license even when he could. A cop pulled him over and impounded his car for driving without his license. His parents just gave him his grandmas car so the cop wouldn't recognize him while driving to work. Even the courts have failed him. In the last two years he's been in court twice. Once for the above situation. The second was because when he was pulled over he had weed on him so he ate it. He was caught because he still had crumbs on his shirt so they swabbed his mouth. The judge in the first case let him off completely and in the 2nd case they ended up dropping and jail tail and gave him a simple possession charge and ticket. The courts need to with put him in jail for more then 10 days or force him into a treatment program.

Per AP on twitter - Army secretary says Fort Hood shooter saw no combat in Iraq, was not wounded.

Not sure this is PTSD situation.

I am not expert nor do I proclaim to have the answers but for those Vietnam vet and some of today returning vets that I have spoken to this is what they need to know.

They are special and they will always be a soldier deep inside and nobody can take that away from you. As a soldier we are responsible for the burden of war, devastation and duty we served, you’ve done your call to duty with pride, honor and integrity now live your life with that same code of ethics.
Because you are still a soldier deep within it is your responsibility now to continue this walk as a civilian and be respected, protective of others and prosperous. Don’t dishonor yourself and other fellow soldiers by your action. We “all veterans” have this duty to each other, our families, friends, strangers and our future childrens…

That's just insane. Seems like the dude's family and the community in general (re: what you said about the courts) are completely failing someone who really needs some sort of psychological help.

This sounds more like a case of a disgruntled employee to me. Just saw a story where CNN interviewed an anonymous soldier on the base who called Fort Hood "a black hole" that sucks the life out of you. The soldier added that the leadership on the base is in disarray and the general mood within the barracks is devoid of hope. Sounds like the first thing Fort Hood should do moving forward is monitor that soldier.

How about take responsibility for your actions. Just cause you are a soldier doesn't mean you should get special treatment

Absolutely. Ever met someone with ptsd from combat though? It's pretty scary.

But no matter what, there is no excuse to kill someone.

My personal opinion is while, due to the stressful situations they can get put into, PTSD is legit, that label just gets put on many cases where it shouldn't be placed simply due to how the person involved was a member of the armed forces.

Soldier is just like any other profession in that you have a share of crazies (or potential crazies, as in seemingly normal people who just aren't geared to handle stress/adversity and can have adverse reactions to them, re: the fat kid in Full Metal Jacket who killed the drill sergeant as a fictional example that most people know about) amongst the ranks. If a mailman goes postal and starts shooting, it's not PTSD; it's a dude who's not all there snapping. Same can happen to guys like that, too.

Well remember that in this case he did NOT have ptsd. Was only being treated for symptoms of ptsd. He had more mental issues though.

I've met someone with it. It sucks. But the family, friends, judge, etc shouldve realized the severity of it and not enabled him. We give way too many excuses for service men in this country. Same for athletes too
