Damn, QQuaker is getting as good at Isadore with the "cut-n-paste and that's my whole point" style of posting. Makes sense; they're both equal.

I read this and had to reflect for a minute or two. It occurred to me that the Catholic Church seems to change the rules all the time.

I wonder how many people are doing a millenia in purgatory for eating a hot dog on Friday?

I guess if the meat you get from an alder boys ass is OK as long as you don't swallow.

But I digress. I guess I should start my own thread.

I had noticed it, but Izzy's more obnoxious with doing it all over the place, so I notice him doing it more often. They both remind me of those kind of batty old women who always are sending those spam FWD: FWD: FWD: chain emails back and forth because they believe every word of them.

Almost all cut-n-pastes are links, with related commentary by me. The post above regarding prayer/fasting/almsgiving was a full paste submitted in order to provide insight direct from the Catholic Church. Thanks.

There are basic and immutable tenets and doctrinal teaching that cannot change and then there are laws that are designed to help members live their faith. Doctrine(from God) cannot change but manmade laws can. Every organization has laws....envision this as similar to our country. The Constitution cannot be changed, but laws are enacted and changed fairly frequently. The Church is no different...it's laws change to fit time and circumstances and to adapt to the education level of its members, to science, etc.. Maybe the laws don't change fast enough for some, but keep in mind that the Church is multinational....not necessarily 'American' in viewpoint.

So some Catholic Priests molested some boys....becomes "your religion fucked little boys"....

Not really.

I'm not Catholic and actually my dad is a minister.......so that's kind of "not my religion????"

In addition, it wasn't the religion but rather those men that carried out those heinous acts.

But to be fair, it was the overseers that tolerated it. I'm not Catholic, or anti-Catholic, but the priest sexual abuse is one of the worst debacles of our lifetimes. If we complain about Penn State and Jerry Sandusky, it isn't even close to what the Catholic priest abuse entailed and what the people who were supposed to be in charge knew about it.

I agree with you it isn't about religion, but IMO it is about power, and the unwillingness to do the right thing.

To be fair, there are a lot of factors that contributed to the scandal not the least of which was a well meaning, but old and frail pope and too much discretion in local discipline matters left in the hands of the bishops....a very few of which (considering the size of the church) screwed up. Also contributing was the state of psychotherapy in the 70's and even into the 80's (when a lot of this 'toleration' was going on) which viewed sexual deviancy(which included homosexuality) as a treatable , curable disease. Since then (1994), the Church has made considerable changes in how it handles such matters and roots out abusers quickly whenever it finds them.

i'm sure you view Penn State the same way? The whole community is guilty for the sins of Jerry Sandusky? Think for yourself.

^^^

Yeah, I'm not sure what was the cause of the mess, but like most scandals the "cover-up" was in some manners more unimaginable than the crime. The higher-ups (we can argue how high they were up, but it seemed like they were pretty high up) knew they had a scandal, and covered it up for years, and even placed some of the criminals in other dioceses. I agree with Con_Alma, it isn't about the religion, but rather how power can corrupt.
