That's just my own speculation, but as S&L said, it's highly unlikely from my perspective as somebody who knows nothing about airplanes that it could have just exploded mid-air. This is probably a hijacking of some sort related in some way to terrorism or some other nefarious activity. If that does turn out the case, then it was the greatest crime ever committed. The perfect heist. And you can expect a Captain Phillips-like movie to made about it in the future. This story really is better than fiction.
Another interesting theory I heard was they had to make an emergency landing somewhere in "terrorist country" on a dirt runway and were taken hostage immediately. Yes, probably a .05% chance but definitely an interesting guess.

Which is all what it is right now. A guess.

I think that's just it, what makes this perhaps the greatest mystery of modern times: The notion that virtually anything could have happened here and, despite all of our advances in technology, after more than a week of searching we still have no idea where in the hell this plane is.

Yeah it's pretty incredible. And I'm with you on this being an epic mystery. In the movies, they'd bring in a Sherlock Holmes right about now.

I think, and I'm only taking a stab in the dark here, that the plane was landed and is currently being prepped. Wouldn't be surprised to see it go into a building or crowded area with bombs galore strapped to it.

People in the western world think that nothing is possible, that they're so safe and secure and nothing like this can happen. Fact is, overseas anything is possible.

Radars, satellites..it's all bullshit. People say they can't land without someone knowing..I'm calling bs.

Careful. MB doesn't take too kindly to opinions here.

I mean what can you say? I'm wrong, that we would be able to tell if a plane was landing, due to satellites and radar? Then why haven't we done that?

Is this a hostage situation? Why wouldn't they come out with their demands by now? It's been 8 days. Why wait this long?

The plane crashed? Where is it then? We have 12 different navy's out looking for debris and haven't found a thing.

Im curious on the black box. I havent been paying NEARLY as much attention to this as you guys (actually, this has been my main source for updates). But I thought those things were impossible to turn off?

You have to find the black box first, it does not transmit data in real time (though I think there will be a strong push for that after this incident).

A black box that transmits real time data just in case another plane takes off and has all it's transponders turned off? Sounds like a reason to increase ticket prices to pay for that expensive piece of technology.

But that's what we do, overreact to the extreme.

Easy, I was making fun of MB.

You're idea is possible. But I think only if they wanted to load it with explosives. Otherwise why not just not another 9/11? Hijack and fly it into a building. It seems like such an unlikely thing to pull off. Although, so far so good if that's what they are doing.

I know, I didn't mean that to be venomous against you. Just expanding on my point. Every time someone in the US discounts a story because "that would never happen" it makes me laugh. There are really smart people out there who are always planning the next 9/11. It appears they've found their next mastermind attack.

100% agree. Americans have a false sense of security, which is especially amusing after 9/11. Most people don't realize the hate that other countries of for us.

then when a plane crashes in the ocean, how do they know where to look? I thought the black box emitted a beacon or something for it to be located?

that, or you could just buy a plane and do whatever you want with it at your leisure. why steal the most looked for plane in the world right now?

The most plausible theory I've seen is the plane was shot down.

The problem I have with the landing/hijacking scenario is that you don't just set down a 777 on a short patch of dirt.

The plane flew for 4+ hours after disappearing how do you explain that?

That's because everybody was dead. The plane exceeded the 43000 foot ceiling limitation the plane has and the lack of oxygen killed all on board.

You're saying someone hijacked the plane, flew that high, killing everyone on board but the hijackers, then landed the plane for their own use?

Interesting.
