I have only been to Raliegh area a couple times since we have lived in NC to go to college basketball games, so do not have much input on housing.

I do know that Wake County schools and particularly Cary schools are some of the best in the state. Cary has 3 out of top 10 and 4 out of top 20 ranked elementary schools in the state so your fiance should try to get a teaching job there. Do you and your fiance know that NC is one of the lowest paying states for teachers - like 48 out of 50 states? They have not had a raise for 3-4 years? There are a ton of charter schools starting up evey year here as well, pulling state funds from public, county schools. One of the big issues is that NC property taxes are very low in most counties (were 1/3 of my OH property taxes) and school funding not that good from that.

Welcome to NC Laley! I second this message about Wake schools. Unfortunately for your fiancee the NC school districts pay terribly almost everywhere. They just "raised" the teacher starting salary to $33,000. That's the first raise to teacher wages in quite some time. I know that is a big point of contention at the moment.

I only went through Raleigh once in 2010 so I don't know much about the area. City-data forums for NC are pretty active so they may be able to provide some feedback on good neighborhoods.

Meh, not too awful for a starting salary. It could be worse. My wife started at $30,000.

I'd rather get $33,000 with teacher schedule than just substitute teaching. Great supplemental income and spouse job for numerous reasons.

Yea, not sure what the starting salary is in South Central Ohio now, but it was right around 30K not too long ago. 33K doesn't sound bad, depending on the cost-of-living.

Ah, had no idea. I always assumed mid-40's was starting for teacher. NC in general is pretty comparable in cost of living to Ohio with lower property taxes as someone mentioned above.

Oh taxes reminds me of another piece of advice for Laley. Keep your car registered in another state for as long as you can. We have an annual vehicle tax based on the value of your car in some NCDOT system comparable to Kelly Blue Book. I don't have anything special (2012 Sonata) but the first two years the tax has been well over $200. The only nice thing is it reduces every year you have the same car.

Go to Texas or Wyoming for incredible teacher's starting pay...$45,000-55,000. Most states aren't there.

Yeah I think Ohio's average is about $60k, but if you have your masters you should be making more money

I have heard, and someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but teaching degrees from Northern states usually give you better options to teach different grade levels down south. For instance, a K-8 degree up here, translates to a K-12 down there. Don't know how many states that is true for though. My aunt got her teaching degree in South Carolina, and said it's hardly good enough for her to even teach in a school up north.

I just did my daughter's taxes for her. She's a 2nd year 3rd grade teacher in the Southwestern School district(Ohio). Doesn't have her Masters yet, but has her reading certification. Her w-2 box 5(gross wage) was $39,969. That's half of her 1st year and half of her second year.

He might have meant average pay....but that's a touch high I'd say.

In 1998 I started at $21,800. Since 2009 I've made just a bit over $50,000 (no raise in 4 years)...that does include getting my master's in 2003.

My district tops out at $62,250.... That is master's +30 hours and 27+ years of teaching.

I was about to say, that has to be on the lower end of the state. Also, your starting salary is on par with my friends who are relatively new teachers in Ohio.

There are teachers starting out at 21K a year with a Bachelor degree in public schools? That's insane.

Well, it was a bit of an exaggeration. Definitely not 21k, but i know some who are making under 30k starting out. On one end, that's shitty, on the other end they don't work all year.

Yea, my buddy is a teacher and just laughs at other teachers when they claim to be underpaid and like to tell people how hard they work. 30K works out to roughly $24/hr, depending on the length of the districts school day.

If you think of the first down line, score and time (scorebug), the player identifiers in a crowd (horse racing uses this a lot), Virtual Putt line on golf telecasts etc...thats all them.

To start, I will be doing some cycling as they may be sending me to France for the Tour de France. But more than likely I will end up on Notre Dame or ACC football in the fall. We travel to the site the day the truck arrives for whoever is broadcasting. We set up all the technology and cameras for our stuff, and then have a tie in to the networks truck that they can take our feed whenever they want to use it. Thats the best way I can explain it without using a bunch of terms and stuff nobody will understand lol.

Here is a good overview of the bigger products currently in use http://www.smt.com/products

EDIT: Ideally, I will be on Thursday Night Football (SMT just finalized a contract with CBS when CBS finalized the rights to TNF) or SNF this fall, but I doubt I will get that with so few months on the job. Probably more likely I will be on those in 2015.
sounds pretty sweet and fun man. congrats again.

Our starting salary now is either just above or just below $30,000

My salary rose quickly up to $50,000 but after 13 years the "steps" are every 4 or 5 years and mine timed out without any raises. Seems like my first 8 years we received a 4% raise and a $1,000-$1200 step every year. We gave a $1.5 million surplus but they refuse to give any raises and are likely cutting a few teachers. 5 year projection says our insurance rates will cause us to be in the hole by 2016...whatever.

I need to get my +15 and +30
