Friend owed me an all you can eat wings at the local pub from a bet from abotu 4-5 years ago.
This morning he hands me a coupon that he got out of some advertisement for a free AYCE order at this place.

Technically it is paying off the bet...but is it copout?

(he also owes me two bricks of .223 LR but they are hard to find).

It's a copout. HE needs to be the one buying, and you should still keep the coupon!

It's a cop-out but I'd forgive the debt.

Was the coupon available to you before he gave it to you?

That might play a role. You are getting a meal you wouldnt have otherwise been able to get, regardless of if he is paying or not. Doesnt sound like the bet specified he himself had to pay. If the coupon was available to you as well (newspaper or something)...then thats bullshit lol

4-5 years ago? Who holds out on a ~$10 bet for half a decade?

To be honest with I totally had forgotten about it because I was stuck at Ft Bragg for a couple of months after it happened.. It was a bet on the reds getting 90 wins or more back in 2010.

YEs. the coupon is available to me...or anyone.

The same sort of person who holds out on a $20 bet and ignores every attempt to show him the error of his ways.

In other words, the sort of person who could disappear off the face of the earth and no one would care. At all.

Or at the very least, let him know he's a class A bitch for (a) waiting 4-5 years to pay off a tiny bet and (b) then doing so via free coupon, as opposed to actually, you know, paying off his losses.

Kind of person I'd do a second bet against that I knew I'd probably lose and if it happened, just be like, "Well, when I find a free coupon for whatever you won, you'll get your winnings, like I did. Now fuck you."

No question it's a copout.
But I suppose I'd still be nice and 'let him off the hook.'

I think it's a copout.

But then again, let's say he had brought you with him and then put everything on one check and used the coupon...would you still think it's a copout? I don't know if I would in that case.

I'd definitely give him shit about it. But I'd take the coupon and call it even.

The bet was for a free meal. You got a free meal. Debt paid.

If I lost a bet to you and I owed you $20, and we were walking to the ATM so I can pay you...and along the way, we both spotted a $20 bill sitting on the ground, and I picked it up and gave it to you and said "debt paid" would you be satisfied?

Yep. Any way you look at it, you now have $20 less and I have $20 more. How you got the $20 is completely irrelevant to payment of the debt.

If we both spotted the $20, I'd push you out of the way, grab the $20 and proceed onto the ATM where I'd shortly have $40.

You picked it up. +$20.
You gave it away. -$20.

You technically have $20 less than you would if you didn't owe on the bet.

But I disagree with gut's original post. The coupon doesn't cut it.
