Why do people have to announce they are gay?

Because it was probably going to come out anyway. I'm assuming it is better to out yourself than have the media or someone else do it.WebFire;1578489 wrote:"Hey everyone! I'm gay! But please don't treat me any differently. Even though you weren't before you knew. Hey everyone, I'm gay!"

Because he acts gay? Because people see him with men?pmoney25;1578506 wrote:Because it was probably going to come out anyway. I'm assuming it is better to out yourself than have the media or someone else do it.

Maybe he doesn't want to have to hide who he is, so now when joins a team there is no need to worry about it.WebFire;1578509 wrote:Because he acts gay? Because people see him with men?
I highly doubt he did it for attention.

Hide from what though? I don't hide from being a hetero until I announce it. Just live life. Be normal. If someone figures it out, tell them you are gay and move on.pmoney25;1578524 wrote:Maybe he doesn't want to have to hide who he is, so now when joins a team there is no need to worry about it.

Maybe a coincidence, but I highly doubt it.
@NFLdraftboard: cbssports dropped Michael Sam from their 90th ranked player to 160th overnight. #justsayin

I think baseball would be a much bigger deal than football to be gay in

If, as he said, a lot of people knew about it (such as all his teammates and the staff at Mizzou), he probably didn't want that sort of thing to be publicly disclosed by someone else during that time where he's having talks with NFL personnel and the like. As Wildcats posted, his draft stock immediately got a lot worse, but right now, there's plenty of time to improve it again. Having the stock plummet due to that coming out right before the draft would be a lot tougher to recover from.WebFire;1578531 wrote:Hide from what though? Also, I'm not bothered. I'm asking questions. I won't lose sleep over it tonight.

Didn't say no one should ever be bothered by anything. They, however, should always be able to articulate why.WebFire;1578559 wrote:So no one should ever be bothered by anything ever? WTF kind of question is that?

So it has nothing to do with actually being gay, but maximizing his draft status?Heretic;1578548 wrote:If, as he said, a lot of people knew about it (such as all his teammates and the staff at Mizzou), he probably didn't want that sort of thing to be publicly disclosed by someone else during that time where he's having talks with NFL personnel and the like. I think I articulated why. I don't see the necessity in declaring one's sexual preference.queencitybuckeye;1578567 wrote:Didn't say no one should ever be bothered by anything. They, however, should always be able to articulate why.

Anyone who is wondering why he felt the need to publicly come out (I'm looking at you webfire) seems completely ignorant to the internal struggle some GLBT deal with when it comes to finally coming out.
I applaud him for doing it; he'll be the first openly gay player in any professional sport to be drafted, but apparently being the first to admit you're part of a group persecuted for nothing more than their sexual preference isn't a big deal.

I agree, but I seriously hope in a couple years it won't be a big deal at all if someone lets it be known they are gay. The media circus over this shit is already getting old.lhslep134;1578594 wrote:Anyone who is wondering why he felt the need to publicly come out (I'm looking at you webfire) seems completely ignorant to the internal struggle some GLBT deal with when it comes to finally coming out.

It shouldn't be a big deal now, but it is because of how bigoted some of America still is. The more athletes that come out, the less and less of a deal it becomes to the mainstream. Hopefully Sam opened Pandora's box.like_that;1578611 wrote:I agree, but I seriously hope in a couple years it won't be a big deal at all if someone lets it be known they are gay.
