I highly doubt he did it for attention.
If, as he said, a lot of people knew about it (such as all his teammates and the staff at Mizzou), he probably didn't want that sort of thing to be publicly disclosed by someone else during that time where he's having talks with NFL personnel and the like. As Wildcats posted, his draft stock immediately got a lot worse, but right now, there's plenty of time to improve it again.
