My wife and I have several banking accounts between three different banks.</SPAN>
Some account I’m not listed and the same for her. </SPAN>
We have been doing business with this one bank for years the teller know our names and we visit this bank almost every Saturday morning with deposits together. </SPAN>

So the wife hands me some cash and a deposit slip that she need deposited this morning. NOT A PROBLEM</SPAN>

On my way to the office (really breakfast) I pull into the drive up window, place the cash and deposit slip in the tube. </SPAN>
Teller: Hi Belly … can I see your ID </SPAN>
I’m thinking.. you know my name and who I am </SPAN>
Belly: You need my ID .. why?</SPAN>
Teller: With cash deposit we have to verify </SPAN>
Belly: It’s a “deposit only” cash into a well establish account….</SPAN>
Send her my ID</SPAN>
Teller: Belly We can deposit this , you’re not on the account</SPAN>
Belly: I know that .. we’ve been doing this for years</SPAN>
Teller: New policy </SPAN>
Belly: So let me understand this. I’m giving you cash, deposit only, into a establish account, where we have multiple accounts with substantial amount, you know who my wife and I are and now you can’t make this transaction. </SPAN>
Teller: Your wife will have to put you on the account or she will have to make the deposit. </SPAN>
Belly: I know you did make this rule/policy change… But could you please tell the manager I would like a call with the name of the asshole who came up this change. Please mention that if my cash and my wife cash is good to be deposited .. it’s cash, the currency of America.</SPAN>
. Please send me back the deposit slip and cash.. </SPAN>
Teller: Here is a flier of the policy changes also</SPAN>
Belly: What happens if I would have dropped this in the night deposit?</SPAN>
Teller: We would have deposited but not until tomorrow.</SPAN>
Belly: Really . Does it benefit the Bank to get as much money in as deposit, to start gaining interest? </SPAN>
Teller: I don’t know. But Mr. Belly all banks will have to have this policy...</SPAN>
Belly: So this is something that you've been told to do by the Goverment?
Teller: I think so
Note : was nice to the teller, she just the front line person and she knew this was an stupid policy. Common sense would tell you this.. </SPAN>

This is crazy … ”Deposit only “cash is not good anymore…if you’re not on the account</SPAN>

Thoughts and Opinions? </SPAN>

Probably comes down from some scams or schemes that someone perpetrated before.

Maybe the account is in Person A's account. Maybe the account goes untouched or whatever. Person B routinely deposits cash, after cash, after cash Maybe illegal dealings or whatever and when thy come loking for Person A they are like.....I never deposited that in there and maybe got off.

I saw a sign that ID would be required and an account holder must deposit it a few weeks ago, but thought nothing of it because I never have cash and do all of my deposits via ATM or app (if a check)

Also I don't think it's a big deal anyway

Does the bank know if you have begun to launder money?

Based on his scenario, I think it's a big deal, considering they've been doing business there for years, and the damn teller knows him and his wife both by name, and she's probably done a hundred of the same type of transaction with Belly in the past.

Chase recently added a limit to money withdrawn per day. Didn't announce it, but something to keep an eye on.

Unfortunately, this will be happening with all banks. You can thank the good 'ol United States Government for this. I work for one of the Big three, and I can tell you it's coming. I can also tell you that it's going to be a pain in the ass for the tellers as well.

It comes down to anti-money laundering. A criminal can deposit dirty cash into an account that they're not an owner of (say a friend or spouse), and then withdraw clean money at a later date. The problem is that this affects more innocent people than the criminals (in my opinion). What happens with Mom or Dad wants to put $100 into their kid's account who's away at school? We would either suggest that they do a transfer from their personal account, or deposit a check. It's not an easy conversation to have with a customer. Especially if you're considered a "known customer" like Belly and his wife.

We haven't changed our policy yet, but we are going to be rolling this out over the coming months.

So because of that, the rules don't apply to Belly?

Do they copy the ID with every transaction? I mean, if they know it's belly, why is the ID necessary?

Because that's what their rule states. It doesn't matter if the rule make sense or not, it's their rule.

I would think it is BS if they have to make a copy of each transaction.

Complete BS.

Even though the teller knew him, maybe her boss was nearby making sure they checked them. I know I was in an industry that we were supposed to check ID's before getting into people's accounts and if we knew the person we wouldnt do it unless a higher up was there.

or maybe they have to type something from the ID in.

Rather than cry about it, why don't you have her wife make her own deposit?

Or just drop it in the night deposit. Considering they said it would still get deposited that way.

Well the easiest solution is Belly just get added to your wife's account? Is there a reason why you aren't already on it?

I can't remember the last time I talked to a teller. All my business is done via ATM. Deposits (cash and checks), withdraws, etc. Screw dealing with people.

Chances are the teller has to record the I.D. that was presented at the time. Even though there are no "higher ups" around, she still would need to put that info down because that information is audited. Copying the I.D. serves little purpose because primary I.D. can be changed or faked.

That was temporary because of the Target clusterfuck. They raised it substantially within 2 days of adding it.
