More on this district player of the year thing......Looks like it's a district of the Ohio High School Basketball coaches Assn. Our area of the state is in district 4, and it's broken down by divisions. Here's what their site has on past all-star teams:
http://www.district4coaches.org/Awards.htm
Pitman is right, there always used to be (and still is) a
NE Inland District team (which was voted on by area writers)...and in our area you also had
various all-conference teams (OCC, WCAL, PAC) and the
All-DR team.
So this District All-Star/POY thing is voted on by coaches of the teams and it's been around since 2005 it seems. It also appears that they haven't updated their website since the 2011 season.
In that year, the District 4-Division 3 teams were:
Orrville, Canton CC, St Thomas, E Canton, Triway (who is now D-2), Tuslaw, Loudonville.....and WCAL teams Northwestern, Norwayne, Hillsdale, Waynedale, Smithville, Chippewa. Dalton would now be a part of this group as they are now D-3.
So around 15 teams....and 7 of them from 1 conference.
Any wonder why a WCAL kid was district POY? Simple.
It was collusion. The WCAL backscratchers got together and voted a Norwayne kid as their conf. POY, and then voted ANOTHER Norwayne kid as the District 4 POY (probably on the same night). The non-WCAL coaches probably voted for several different kids, but the WCAL's Band of Brothers all voting for 1 guy made him POY.
So a kid will be district POY that wasn't even his own conference's POY.
