Stupid on both sides. Policy seems dumb but the dude was likely an asshole to the secretary.

"The school secretary attempts to get Howe to fill in a form to authorize the children to leave the school on their own, which Howe refuses to sign because he is escorting the children out of the school, stating, “They’re walking with me when school is dismissed, per state law.”

Just fill in the god damn form and you can go home with your kids, then bring this policy up at the next school board meeting.

I actually hope he wins the lawsuit. If you feel your kid is at danger walking out of school onto a road with a lot of traffic you don't wait a month for the next school board meeting. As a parent you make sure your kid is safe. He has a special needs daughter and I'm sure he feels much safer being with her walking across busy traffic then her walking alone.

Maybe.... Just maybe, he does not want his kids to leave on their own.

The parent was actually very calm. It was the officer who was excitable.

The form the secretary wanted him to sign was a permission form giving the school permission for the children to leave BY THEMSELVES. The form was irrelevant when a parent was standing there and it was the parent who was escorting his OWN CHILDREN out of school at the end of the day.

We are aloud to pickup our children and walk them out of the school w/out signing any papers. Hope this helps.

Makes sense. Because, you know, you're their parents.

If the form the guy was told to sign stated that he, the parent, was walking his children home today, he would have signed it. He was simply not signing a form allowing his children to leave by themselves. There's a difference. He was correct in not agreeing to sign a form that didn't apply to the situation and that he wasn't giving consent to.

It could just be a policy they have ("make sure they sign the form before taking their kids" or something. Maybe they have a poorly proofread multipurpose form, maybe she handed the wrong form to him, etc.

The school's policy sounds dumb but so does getting all rabble rabble about it.

Nope. Though watching it the guy seemed to have the intention of getting arrested. Cop was an asshole, sounds like the guy was attempting to get the sheriff and his attorney involved beforehand though. Again, shouldn't have been arrested though since he wasn't shouting or anything.
