Our Defense stat numbers are inflated because we got to play FAMU and Purdue.
We gave up 30 to NW, 24 to Wisky, 35 to Illinois, 34 to cal, and 24 to Iowa... I have a hard time believing that anybody has watched our defense all season and would admit that they seem "elite".
Who is at fault for that? I'm not sure, but we are The Ohio State University. We should have an elite defense almost every single year. We have not had an elite defense in the last 3 years, but we are still winning. Until we stop winning, I am hard pressed to ask for a replacement. Maybe we give up more points to bad teams because they get the ball more often then when they play other teams...I dont really know. But until we lose, I can't yell "Fire Fickell". However, I will be watching our bowl game very closely. If we do happen to lose, and it is because of our D then Fickell has to go. I am no expert, so I have no idea who is actually at fault for our problems on D, but if we lose in a big game after some of the performances we have seen over this year and last, somebody has to take the fall, and it isn't about to be a head coach who is on a 22 game winning streak.

You can't use the argument "OSU played FAMU and Purdue" when teams like Alabama play Chattanooga and Georgia State every year. Every team plays bad teams. It averages out.

It's not a perfect average at all. It might average OSU with Alabama and some of the other big time programs, but our SOS is not real strong. We should have a top 10 D because we don't play a crap schedule, and against the decent/average teams we have played, we have given up lots of points.Pick6;1537763 wrote:You can't use the argument "OSU played FAMU and Purdue" when teams like Alabama play Chattanooga and Georgia State every year. True. I probably shouldn't have even argued that (even though I bet we've played a lot more bad offenses than good), in reality the best argument (and probably worst) is that our D absolutely does not pass the eye test. I am a diehard buckeye fan and I refuse to believe that we have a top 10 defense. Maybe we do, statistically, but those numbers must are flawed.LJ;1537769 wrote:They have also played some top 50 offenses

Alabama has played 2 top 50 total O teams. OSU has played 4. Alabama gave up an average of 29.5 points against those top 50. OSU an average of 19.75 to top 50 offenses.ohiobucks1;1537765 wrote:It's not a perfect average at all. I don't think Alabama's D is very good, either. FSU is the only D out of the top 4 that I think is elite. I just think we should be better than we are. We've recruited well. We have been traditionally extremely solid on D, but (at least in my opinion) we haven't been good in over 3 years... What gives? I think it potentially may be Fickell.LJ;1537776 wrote:Alabama has played 2 top 50 total O teams. OSU has played 4. Alabama gave up an average of 29.5 points against those top 50. We have a top 10 rush D and a top 10 pass rush. Our back end is the issue. The lack of continuity from suspensions, injuries, ejections etc have not helped. Would that continuity make for an elite secondary? Doubtful, but I think we see a lot of those breakdowns disappear when those guys van play their own assignments and trust everyone else to do their jobs.ohiobucks1;1537774 wrote:True. I agree in part, but you bring up a good point. The secondary has not gotten it done. I think Coombs gets too much of a free pass because he is such an awesome person. Our secondary development has been fucking terrible under him. However, I don't think the linebackers have been great the last few seasons, either.LJ;1537779 wrote:We have a top 10 rush D and a top 10 pass rush. Our back end is the issue. Yeah, I think Coombs and Withers are getting off too easy with the fans.ohiobucks1;1537802 wrote:I agree in part, but you bring up a good point. The secondary has not gotten it done. As for linebackers, I dunno what the problem is. If Fickell decided that he didn't want to be a coord anymore or become a head coach, I think just about any team in the country would take him as a LB coach. He has coached 9 draft pics, 2 first rounders, and multiple AA and award winners. I think some highly rated LB recruits that busted early have caused issues in the LB corps. I think Perry and Grant are starting to come around, especially Perry.

It's nice to see we have someone on here that not only has his finger directly on the pulse of all things OSU, but also has a direct pipeline to the coaching staff as well. I think I can speak for OC Nation when I say- THANK YOU!!!LJ;1537233 wrote:Probably a combo of some coaches joking around about Illinois during the week combined with the perception the players already had.

I never really understood why LJ took so much shit on here...I see it now.
This guy is the fucking worst. I can't imagine how miserable he would be in real life to hang around. Just constantly nitpicking and thinking he's right about everything. Ugh.

Neat, but I didn't say I had never heard of it. I said I had never been to a "brunch" and didn't know what it entailed. I did also find out something interesting. Brunch isn't as popular here because Ohio liquor laws prohibit unlimited drinks to be served.Automatik;1537908 wrote:Brunch? NEVER HEARD OF IT!
