You can then add a prospect and divert that 9M into either upgrading elsewhere or making sure you can retain some of your other talent.
Lets face it. There are 4 contracts crippling this team.
1. Votto - he's here for life, the Reds wouldn't deal him nor would anyone necessarily want him at this price
2. Broxton - he's on the shelf until at least May of 2014 and has no value
3. Ludwick - he's coming off an injury, is 37 years old and plays the easiest position to find a hitter, thus, no value
4. Phillips - he's still considered an elite player in all aspects, but there could be an expected dip in production and are other issues with him
If the Reds are going to make any improvements, aside from hiring a manager, they need to do something about 1 of these 4. It would be great to keep BP and somehow move Broxton and Ludwick's contracts, but you can see why Phillips is being rumored. It's really their only avenue.
Ludwick deal was a bad one before the ink even dried.
Team def needs LF punch, and with Choo probably gone they also need to fill his shoes with getting on base. BH will be electric when he gets on, but will he get on enough? I dont know if he will have the green light whenever he wants.
Hate to say it but Chapman may be their best value right now. If he is going to just be the closer then I think someone else can fill that spot and save pretty much what he did.
I am not opposed to move BP, not at all. You cannot scoff at his .338 and 100+ this past season though. If they do though the best be getting a sure thing in return.
