Granted, it's been 12 years for me...and yes I attended for a time, but here are my gripes.
1. Administration - first and fucking foremost. "We are not a party school, we are a social school" - verbatim from the dean of students at freshman orientation. BULLSHIT, and that's why you attract the type of students you do. They even pulled the "look at the persons sitting next to you - one of them won't be here" nonsense at said orientation. The scare tactics, and heavy handed enforcement employed and executed by both OUPD and APD (undercovers tagging underages at the kegs of house parties; fabricated "noise" complaints, and even goddamn jaywalking) are some of the things you can expect while attending OU. Having students live in the dorms until post-soph year? That's just another convenient way to police your drunk/druggy students so you wantonly dole out infractions until you get rid of your unwanted crowd.
And before APD is separate from the university......who do you think runs Athens?
2. Academics - unless you're going there for Journalism, why bother? The scenery? To party (probably).....It's a good school, but nothing great. I get it if you live in SE Ohio but there is nothing that makes it stand out more than any other Ohio public university.
3. Advisors - this one's a bit more personal, but I'm not the only person I know who felt that their advisory staff (namely academic, but also disciplinarian) left a lot to be desired. Had a freshman advisor who tried to have me sign up for the same class twice in one year. A buddy of mine at the time was told that the college of communication wasn't right for him because it was probably too competitive for him (wtf). And my favorite was the disciplinary advisor (after my underage) asked me if I've ever been blackout drunk (well yeah) only to go on some scared straight shit about how that was the brain's way of shutting down from alcohol poisoning.
and then fuck them over trying to trademark 'Ohio'
