That's not what I saw yesterday. After nearly every kickoff San Diego returned the ball to the 30 or better. Actually of the 6 kickoff's after TD's, 5 were returned past the 25 and 4 of those were past the 30. Only 1 went into the endzone and it was a touchback. Well duh.
Kick that thing deep and half the time they'll down it and start at the 25. If they do run it out teach your special teams to stop the return.
The Buckeyes always seem to have a tough time stopping the return which, I suppose, speaks to the theory of popping the ball up short to give the special teams time to adjust.
It just doesn't seem to be all that effective. Do this against the better teams and all Ohio State is going to do is yield field position putting tons of pressure on the defense.
Screw the "on purpose" thing IMHO.
